I am interested in purchasing a will registered in 1826 from my ancestor who lived and died in Shifnal.  Find My Past gives details of National Archives files.  I have keyed in the name, place and dates but it comes back as not having the information.  I have tried the Parish Chest online to no avail.  Can anyone tell me where I could get it.  I have in the past obtained my Grandfathers will from a company in Leeds?  Can soon get onto this source if it might be the only place at a cost.

Hello Jean

Shifnal is in the Diocese of Lichfield so Wills prior to 1858 for the Shifnal area should be at Lichfield.

On the Find my Past web site you need to look at the 'Staffordshire, Dioceses Of Lichfield and Coventry Wills and Probate 1521-1860'

Try searching for the name there.  If it is available you should be able to download it as part of your subscription.  You may find there are two results - one is for the index entry and the other for the Will itself.  You need to download each page of the Will individually, use the next page arrow.

If you can't find it put the name and date on this message forum so we can have a look.

I have world wide subscription to Find My Past which is where I got the initial information from.  The name is Richard RIGBY b1751, probate and death 1826 and he lived in Shifnal.  The images on FMP come up with register entries, not the will itself.  I guess I will have to contact Lichfield but wondered if they could be found anywhere else without paying.

Hello Jean

The search on FmP is only bringing up the index entry.  There should be a second reference to the actual will.

As a user it is impossible to know whether the will has been lost (hopefully not at this date) or not referenced correctly.

I suggest you contact FmP initially because they may have a way of checking it.

Its £5.50 for a will from LRO:

Always good service. You could get access to it for free by visting and maybe on film at an LDS center.

if you search for Richard Rigley you can get the scan of the will.

Thanks Jackie, will do.  Looks like handwriting difficult to read.
