Once on the Historic England's Buildings at Risk Register, Myndtown Church is a little jewel in the heart of the Long Mynd and was in danger of falling down and disappearing unless something was done to save it.

Shropshire Family History Society will be having a stand at the event, with a team of volunteer helpers, computers and books. They will also be selling a selection of Local Interest Books and Maps, some Family History Books and our own CDs.

Burwarton Show

Burwarton Show is one of the premier one-day agricultural shows in the country attracting some twenty thousand visitors each year to the glorious South Shropshire countryside.

After the last four very succesful years for us, we have booked a space again at this show to make contact with interested South Shropshire folk. smiley

The Show is held at Cleobury North on the B4364 between Bridgnorth and Ludlow, South Shropshire (Postcode WV16 6RP for satnav users) from 8.15 am to 5.30 pm (depending on interest). See map here.

Subject - "Thomas Telford – his Life and Works in Shropshire”

The Scottish civil engineer was County Surveyor for Shropshire at the end of the 18th Century and beginning of the 19th Century.   His works in Shropshire included roads, bridges, tollhouses, churches, canals and associated buildings.

Meriel is an intern the Society supports at the Archives. Along with her mentor, Sarah Davies, they will describe her activities at the Archives and the Society’s involvement in her year as an intern. They will also shed light on the documents available to the public regarding the Poor Law, an area that many researchers may not be familiar with.

Subject - "Battles and Sieges of the Anglo-Boer War: the Role of the KSLI at the Battle of Paadeberg”

This is a follow-up from the talk Graham gave last November. We all may have heard of the sieges at Mafeking, Ladysmith, Kimberley and the battles which took place at Spion Kop and Colenso, but what really happened? Graham will bring along to his talk many artefacts and documents including army telegrams, coded messages, letters, banknotes, passes and prisoner of war material.
