Hello, I am a new member to SFHS and live in Altrincham.
Are there any fellow members who frequently visit Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury who could kindly do a look up for me?

I am trying to find the marriage of William WILLIAMS and Mary ? which I believe to be around late 1836, so just before civil registration starts.
I know the following:

  • William WILLIAMS was born in High Ercall c 1811 (1881 census) and died 1889 - Shawbury.
  • He is buried in St Mary's Church, Shawbury.
  • He owned a house and grocer's shop in the village and it is likely the family always lived there.
  • I have found 7 children of the marriage thus far.
  • William's wife, Mary ? was born in Harcourt Park circa 1816 and died on 26 June 1896, also buried in St Mary's Church, Shawbury.

Please forgive any errors in spelling of places as I am not a native of Salop.  I am not sure where William and Mary married, her maiden name or whether the Church where the marriage took place has deposited its records yet.
If this is a big ask then perhaps someone could let me know.
Thank you so much.

Hello

As far as I can see the marriage does not appear in the Shropshire Marriage Index (available on CD-ROM from Shropshire FHS - see Shop top right of this screen) and neither does it appear in Boyd's Marriage Index.

You should buy the Birth Certificate of one of their children.  This will provide you with the maiden name of Mary which will be a considerable help in searching for the marriage.

Have you considered the possibility that William may have married more than once?  If this is the case then his children could have two different mothers and this won't be apparent from census entries.

Thank you Mike for your response and comments.  I have now applied for the BC of sibling number 2.  I had thought about William marrying more than once though the name Mary appears as the wife in the census returns from 1841.  I do realise that he could have married more than one Mary!  Vanessa
