Message: Hi!, I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me..I'm researching my family history,and understand that my great -great grandfather Mr William BUCKLE and his family lived in Church Stretton for a good part of his life..William was a golf-professional at Chuch Stretton Golf Club. I believe they lived at number 12 or 2 Cunnery/Cannery? road around 1901,and at Watling Street South around 1911. I was wondering and hoping!,with your help - that perhaps some old photographs or information of these addresses or Church Stretton in general survive from this era?,and if so, how would it be possible for me to view these?..I would be very grateful and appreciative for any information you could please give me..

We have a copy of The Church Stretton Golf Club Centenenary book.and your ancestor W.BUCKLE was pro 1903-1910. Our ancestor William EVANS was pro from 1923-1949

Thanks Roy!,that's great!..hopefully there wil be some pics at the golf club..William's son 'William Earnest' (my great grandad) followed in his fathers footsteps and became golf pro at Deane golf club in Lancashire..my grandad was also pro..very interesting!..thanks again for the info..regards,Matt

The transcription of the 1901 Census shows William BUCKLE, aged 42, born in Chesham, Bucks and occupation Golf Professional, living in Cemetery Road, Church Stretton. His family is listed as wife Alice (43), daughters Alice and Nellie (12 & 10), and sons Ernest (5), George (15), John (2) and William (17).
I actually live in Church Stretton and the address is a mis-transcription. It's actually CUNNERY Road (the actual census return shows it quite clearly). Cunnery Road is a long, steep hill on the south of the town.
On the 1911 Census, William Snr (still listed as a Golf Professional) is living at 52 Watling Street South, with wife Alice and Ernest, Nellie and Jack (John).
If you wish, I can take a stroll down Watling Street South and get you a photo of No. 52.
