Hi, any ideas why John and Mary PARTRIDGE, who had a child in Meole Brace in 1785, William and then John in 1788 would not get married until 16 August 1799 in Meole Brace.  I think John's was born in Tugford 1761 parents being William and Ann.

Trying to find anything about William and Ann, their marriage etc.

Just editing a bit as think I have found a marriage for William and Ann STOW in Caynham in 1751.  I think Caynham is quite near to Tugford?

Any help please?

Just a thought, did his first wife called Ann die after the birth of thier children and he then married a second wife also called Ann?

I transcribe parish register details for births in Sussex and read a lot of entries that occasionally provides information of circumstances in relation to the birth of a child. There may be many reasons for people not to marry; an existing spouse; oppostion by family that prevents earlier marriage; people sometimes just did not get around to it.

I have recently dealt with several birth entries for about three or four births where the mother and father's name is different. Each entry states.."....child of XXX and of XXXX who is his former wife's sister"

Some years later another entry records the names again adding that XXX and XXX having now married. No reason given and presumably the first wife had died so there would not be any reason for the marriage not to go ahead. Perhaps they just did not do it.

In my own family my 4X grandparents had two children and a third on the way when they married.

Depending where you obtained the information on the children's birth and actual transcript of the register may show additional information

Thanks for that.  Must get back to my research soon.  I think john was quite young when he first became a father (13) so perhaps the families as you suggest were not happy and they waited until they had the money and were older.
