Does any one know if this 'shut'/passage is still in existence, if long gone where was it situated in the town.

thanks

Molly

Hello Molly, I have a copy of a Council gazeteer for Streets, Roads and Place Names in Shropshire which was printed in 1947. There is no White Close Passage listed which suggests it had gone by 1947.

However, could it be White Horse Passage that you are looking for? This is listed as being at Frankwell in Shrewsburyand was formerly known as Nettles Lane.

Ps My copy of Wildings 1931 Directory of Shrewsbury lists White Horse Passage as starting at 138 Frankwell.

Thanks Jason, will have another look at the census.  They were, I think living in the St Chad's area, and I think Frankwell is on the south side of Shrewsbury if I remember.

Hi Molly, I have an ancestor who was living in Frankwell in the 19th century, and this came under St Chads. Good luck with the search!

Hi Molly

If it is White Horse Passage that you're looking to locate, then it definitely is in Frankwell. If you look on Google Street view, opposite the new Theatre is a pub called the Anchor. The shut used to go alongside this, where Mount Street now stands.

I did my dissertation on the history of Shrewsbury in development terms and my ancestors also lived adjacent the Anchor pub for many years. I have a couple of maps which show White Horse Passage - I will try to upload these for you now.

Hope this link works - http://www.flickr.com/photos/90203791@N05/8199626902/

Click on the photo to zoom in. I have cropped out the relevant part from an 1890 map of Shrewsbury.

If you go over the bridge (north) and then turn right, you can see the notation for the Presb Church and Inn. White Horse Passage is just after this point, leading north.

My family were living here too before they ran the Grocery shop next the the Inn.
