I am researching Robert BOUGHEY  born c. 1795/6   and said to be born  and what looks like  !! .... "Le Springs" Shropshire from the 1851 census -    He came to Liverpool in the early 1800's and married here 1815 to Ann Jones of Caerwys, Flints.    He was a Policeman in Liverpool and eventually became a Superintendant -  He died 1862

I cannot quite make out where he was born -  if anyone has any knowledge of it, I would be grateful

Thank you

Hello Joan,

Have looked for your Robert Boughey born Shropshire 1795/6 on Ancestry. However on the 1851 census his birth place is given at St Springs, Staffordshire. I have also found the probate for Robert (also on Ancestry) dying in 1862 in Liverpool which states he was a retired book-keeper whose wife Ann had pre-deceased him in 1861. I cannot find a man of that name who was in the police.

Would be interested to know where you got your information and what other details you have. Hazel

Hello Joan

When I first looked at Robert's place of birth on the 1851 census (HO.107/2183 fol.267 pg.65) I read the county as Staffordshire but the second letter on the census doesn't have the dash '-' near the top which a letter 't' would have so on reflection it probably is Shropshire.

With regard to the actual place I think you will find it is 'The Springs' but here again there is a complication because there at least ten in Shropshire but fortunately there doesn't appear to be one in Staffordshire.  The ten in Shropshire are:-

Springs, The, Clive.
Springs, The, Ercall Heath, Child's Ercall.
Springs, The, Fords Bank, Queen's Head, West Felton.
Springs, The, Kenley.
Springs, The, «m. WNW of Kenwick, Cockshutt, Ellesmere.
Springs, The, Preston Brockhurst, Shrewsbury.
Springs, The, 1«m. WSW of Selattyn.
Springs, The, «m. S of Sheinton.
Springs, The, Tetchill, Ellesmere.
Springs, The, Woodhouses, Whitchurch. (S of New Woodhouse).

I see that his place of birth is given as Market Drayton in the 1861 census (RG.9/2682 fol.23 pg.49) but that doesn't fit well with the places above. There are a few more places with 'Springs' in them as follows:-

Springs, Lower, Kenley.
Springs, Upper, Kenley.
Springs Brook, Hordley, Ellesmere.
Springs Cottage, Kenwick, Cockshutt, Ellesmere.
Springs Farm, Spoonley, Market Drayton.
Springs Pit, Clive.
Springs Plantation, Newstreet Lane, Moreton Say.
Springs Wood, Woodhouses, Whitchurch.

You are going to have to do some work to sort this out.

Have you seen his Police Service Record? Hopefully that will give a former residence and / or place of birth.

Hello Joan

Bill and I have puzzled over the 1851 census entry and believe the birthplace of Robert Boughey could be Staffordshire Old Springs. This is a few miles south east of Market Drayton, just over the border into Staffordshire. Our map shows Old Springs Farm and Old Springs Hall. This would also be in line with the birthplace of Market Drayton recorded in 1861.
