Hello,
I have recently obtained a birth certificate for a child born in Shrewsbury in 1922.
However, instead of it showing (as expected) that there had been a home birth, the certificate shows that the birth took place at the Victoria Nursing Institution at no. 1 Claremont Bank.
Can anybody shed any light on whether this Institution was possibly particularly used for difficult births or perhaps for births where the home circumstances were inappropriate for a home confinement.
Also, is it known whether the Institution was a "fee charging" or a "free" facility for expectant mothers?
Many thanks.
Peter
Not sure if it will help you, but my mother worked as a cook, circa 1930, at a place she always referred to as "The Nursing Federation" on Claremont Bank.
On googling "Nursing Federation" + "Claremont Bank" I found that The National Archives, Access to Archives, show Shropshire Archives have various Papers, and a bit of the sequence of name changes, which might help you. The earliest date mentioned in the indexing is 1916.
Personally finding out about this, I will have to add this to my list of "to do's".
