Hi, I have been stuck for a number of years on one branch of my family which I am desperate to move back from. I am looking for help with baptisms for a complete Swain family in the Bentlont, Hope Worthen area.  So they would have been baptised in either Hope, Worthen or in a non conformist.

The information what I have is as follows:

  • Ann Swain whom I believe never did marry from the information I have gained even though it does show on some of the census returns

I have found the following:

  • Ann Swain she was born approx 1804 in Worthen

on the 1841 Census (but not sure if this is the correct Ann Swain)

  • Ann Swain born 1804 aged 37
  • William Swain born 1829 aged 12 (son)
  • Mary Swain born 1826 aged 15 (daughter)

I cannot find any Ann nor William on the 1851 census or the 1861 census

My ancestor is a son of Ann Swain called John Swain he was born 19 March 1845 on his birth certificate his father is unnamed. But on his marriage certificate his father is named but not Swain it is a Phillpott.

On the 1851 census I have found John as follows:

  • Ann Swain born 1791 Worthen aged 60
  • Mary Swain born 1826 Worthen aged 26 (daughter) but I believe this should be Ann born 1804 daughter and Mary should be shown as granddaughter
  • John Swain born 1845 Worthen aged 6 (Grandson) which i know is my ancestor and is the son of Ann Swain.

But the Ann born 1791 her age must be wrong? for Ann to be born in 1804?

There is also a Mary Jacks sister aged 30 to Ann born 1791 but there is 30 years difference, so is the Ann year of birth incorrect

I can not find them in the 1861 census

Then Ann appears living with John in both the 1871 Census at The Bog, Wentnor

  • 1871 Mother widow aged 60
  • 1881 Mother widow aged 75

If you have got this far, thank you for reading.  But any help on the baptisms of

  • Ann 1804
  • Mary 1826
  • William 1829
  • John 1845

Would be really appreciated

Thanks in advance

Fiona

Hello Fiona

If you look back a few posts you will see my entries on HEAKIN/SWAIN.

I am working on the Swain family and found out the following info but it needs to be checked out. I don't seem to have the same names and dates as you but they are Swains and they are in the Worthen/Hope area.

Abraham Swain m Jane (no date)

John Swain (bap Worthen 1764) m Martha. They had Abraham (1799), Hannah (1803), Mary (1807), Martha (1810 but died 1812) and my ancestor, John (1816). All at Worthen.

John Swain m Margaret and they had Sarah, Harriet (1845), Cornelia (1847), John (1848), Ann (1849) and my ancestor, Caroline (1842). All at Worthen.

Caroline Swain m Richard Heakin at Hope Church, 19th Nov 1863. They lived in the Bentlawnt area.

Through the Forum I have met another lady searching HEAKIN/SWAIN and I will email her. Please let me know if we have any common ground.

Regards Sue

It may help you to know that pre 1841 Worthen parish records can be searched for free online at:

suepugh7 thank you for your reply I can't see at present the families meeting unless they go back a generation, which is where I am struggling and to move back from Ann Swain born 1804, she could have been a cousin?

My Swains moved to The Bog, Wentnor. But this is how my tree works

John Swain born 1845 son of Ann Swain born 1804 father unnamed

he married a Mary Sockett 18 June 1866 at Hope

they had the following children

  • Mary Ann Swain 1867
  • Abraham Swain 1869
  • Eliza Swain 1873
  • Clara Jane Swain 1874]
  • William Thomas Swain 1876 - 1946 my ancestor
  • Elizabeth Swain 1879

He died 1906

William Thomas Swain married a Ada Elizabeth Richards 1907 @ Wentnor

They had William John Thomas Swain 1907 - 1973 (my ancestor)

and Mildred Lavina Swain 1919

William Thomas Swain married Rose Mahala Evans June 1930

It would be great that the families mixed in they must do as they are all Worthen Swain's but must interlink a generation or to earlier.

I just need to get over this hurdle and I can carry on moving back this is the only branch now which is causing me such a hurdle and no success anywhere I look

Anything you find or someone does know would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hello Fiona

When you have Mel Lockie's site on your screen click Edit (top left of your browser) then Find, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-F, to bring up the search box then just put Swain in the search box. After you find the first just keep clicking Next to go from one to the next all through the file.

Don't forget you can use Copy & Paste to extract all the SWAIN entries.

Hi Mike,

Thank you again for your reply, I have done as you said and either I am doing something wrong or there is no information on them which is rather strange when I type in Swain no matches are found

Thanks for you help

Hello Fiona

Re your reply.  I feel there is a connection with our ancestors somewhere.  Both of us need to keep searching!

I use Mel Locki's site a lot so I re-checked how to search.  Mike is correct - click on Edit and then "Find on this page ...".  When I put Swain in 35 matches came up.  Just keep clicking on Next to go through them.

Good luck and keep in touch.

Thanks Sue,

Yep will have to keep on trying I have been searching this branch arm for 14 years and still not knocked down the damm wall!

There has to be a baptism though for them and as you say the Swains of worthen will related but where generations back but until I get Ann Swain baptism of 1804 can not connect anything is so frustrating lol

I have just been back on the site which you say has 35 shows for Swain was that Worthen?

I clicked on Edit click on find typed Swain clicked on next nothing came up and it says no matches found.

Would it please possible if you have the time and would not mind typing out the ones of the time you have seen or attach the displayed link?

If that is possibly OK? it would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards

Fiona

Hello Fiona

The link above is to some entries in an Institution which doesn't include anyone named Swain. The link you need is

Thanks Mike, that was appreciated so much once i managed to work out where i went wrong to.

But sadly none of my Swains where baptised in  Worthen church, so at least now that means I know they must have been baptised at Hope or a non conformist

But there is no listing for the Hope on the link your provided

I do have Jones born in Worthen, so going to start seeing if anything matches there as they where from Bromlow so if its not heled me on Swain it certainly may have helped me with Jones

Any clues would be great, thank you so much again

Regards

Fiona

Sorry to have misled you with the link in my earlier message. The one given by Michael to the melocki site is the one to go for. This shows that a Hannah Swain was baptised in Worthen on March 18 1803, daughter of John and Martha Swain of Hope - not inconceivable that Hannah would become corrupted to Ann. Note that until 1860 Hope was part of Worthen parish; only in 1860 did it become separated off into a parish of its own. This same John and Martha Swain also had a daughter Mary baptised on April 26 1807 in Worthen.

Thanks Tony,

Yes I have seen this but for I say yes this is deffinately her I want to make sure that there is no baptisms for her in Hope, as this is where her son John married and where she is buried.

I want to also clarify what Ann Swain born 1791 is as both Mary and John (my ancestor) aged 6 living with her

Thanks again any help on Hope would be appreciated

Thanks

Hello, I don't know if you're aware but within the parish of Worthen was also contained the chapelry of Trelystan in Montgomeryshire so it may be worth checking any records there. Jason

How would I find more information about this chaperly?

Thanks
