I'm based in London and I'm looking for help to find out more regarding the maternal side of my family tree

I'm looking into my late mothers family tree and I am struggling as I know very little - only her father Henry J STOREY & mother Laura STOREY (nee ORTON) were born in 1921 (I think he was born in Shropshire but she was not) and were married in Shrewsbury in 1942 - my mother Mary O STOREY (aka Olga Mary STOREY) was born in Shrewsbury the same year 1942 - can anyone point me in a helpful direction? I know very little about my mothers family other than my mothers cousin and believe my mother had siblings and her father had a few siblings too - so theoretically I should have a few relatives out there...plus I know nothing further than my grandparents names -  Can anyone help ?

Many thanks Ellie

Hello Ellie

If you look at FAQ on the blue bar above this will lead you to some useful help.

Your best source of information to get started is always with your family - parents, uncles and aunts and cousins.  Ask if they have any copies of  Birth, Marriage and Death certificates to obtain information and confirm information you already have from other sources.  Maybe someone has a Family Bible containing details of a generation or two.

It is always important to research backwards from yourself one generation at a time.  A Birth Certificate should include the mother's maiden name which would then allow you to search for her marriage to the father.  The Marriage Certificate should include the ages of the groom and bride ('Of full age' just means 21 plus) and the names of the fathers of the groom and bride but these may need treating with caution if the child was brought up by someone other than their birth parents.  If one or both of the fathers had died before the child's marriage they may be marked as deceased.

You can search for Birth, marriage and Death certificates on Ancestry, Find my Past and other subscription websites.  You may be able to try them free of charge at your local library or archive office.  In addition you can use the completely free site, FreeBMD

Looking at your family on the sites mentioned above your mother seems to have had one younger sister and your mother's mother was seventh of ten children born in Fylde, Lancashire.  From the Sept. qtr. of 1911 the birth indexes included the mother's maiden name, so once you can find the maiden name of your ancestor you can search for any children born to the same family using the surname of the father (ORTON) and the maiden name of the mother (BREAKWELL) over a likely time span, say plus of minus ten years to start with.  The places of birth may all be the same as in your case or they may be all over the country if the family moved about with their work.

There is a Probate for your grandfather.  It is dated 17 Feb 1999 at Manchester.  You can order a copy from the Government Find a Will web site.

Your grandmother was actually Laura Ida M. ORTON.
