My family, the WHITEs, ran the Herbert Arms Hotel in Chirbury for many years in the twentieth century. We have an old grandfather clock with an 'S' on the front which stands for SNEAD. I'm trying to find out the nature of the connection between the Whites and the Sneads

Hi Philip, My mother (Eirwen Hudson) was a contempoarary of Fred White, and I was in year below school of his son Robert, whilst my sister was in same year as his sons David & Paul. I vaguely recall Fred's dad living in Camlad Cottages in the 1950's, whilst Fred still ran the farm at the back of The Herbert Arms. Have you got access to Ancestry or Findmypast websites? If so you will find a Robert White as proprietor of the pub in 1901 and 1911 - Robert was born approx 1847 in Derbyshire, and I think he must have been Fred's grandfather. I have a very vague recollection of the name Snead  - was this the surname of Robert's wife, or the wife of his son Charles? It may also have been the middle name of one of your ancestors. A shot in the dark is that I saw it on a gravestone or memorial in Chirbury Church/graveyard. I live in Kent now, so unable to verify the guess of where I saw it. Best of luck with your searches. Phil P.S. If you don't have access to the websites let me know and I'll send you the details of the census records

Hi Philip,I think I've cracked your question. The christian name of wife of Robert White (who ran The Herbert Arms in late 19th/early 20th century) was Annie. The Ancestry website links Robert to both the baptism of Annie and also her probate record. Their son Stanley's middle name was Sneade. Also Annie's maiden name was Sneade ! She was born on 25th December 1845 and baptised on 21st March 1847. Annie's father was Samuel Cartwright Sneade, occupation Grocer, living in West Derby, Liverpool, his wife's name was Anne. You can find baptism records for two of Annie's elder siblings on www.lan-opc.org.uk (search on baptisms for Sneade in period 1830-1850), when Samuel Cartwright Sneade was a Timber Merchant. On the Ancestry website you can also find probate records for both Robert and Annie White in the 1920's.   Confirmation of links through to Annie born 1845 will need some detailed validation work, as I can't find her on 1851 and 1861 Census records living with her parents, but it appears that Samuel Cartwright was baptised in Chirbury in 1795, the son of Thomas and Margaret Snead, and died in Chirbury area in 1877. Samuel's wife Anne was born in Middlesex. There is also an extensive family tree for the White family on the Ancestry website, but that gives Samuel Cartwright Sneade as being the son of Thomas Sneade (1760-?) and Margaret Poulter (1764-?), with Thomas Sneade being the son of Thomas Sneade (1725-?) and ?. When searching website use Sneed, Snead and Sneade as variations of surname. A lot of info above, so I hope it is clear. If you want more detail ask Michael Hulme for my email adress. Regards,Phil

Hi Philip,
If you're interested in history this website gives some interesting info on the village / hamlet of Snead near Churchstoke, which is where your family name may have originated from. Perhaps an early familty member lived there. It also has a stack of info on the history of Chirbury. http://www.cpat.org.uk/projects/longer/histland/montgom/1080.htm

Hi All, I am researching my family tree and have discovered through Ancestry.com that my family (SNEADE) originated from Chirbury.
The furthest I have got so far is Thomas SNEADE born 1760, and married to Margeret POULTER.
Thomas died and left a will which I have downloaded from the Canterbury Wills, 11384-1858.
I am having a little difficulty reading the hand written document. I would appreciate any help from like minded people to decipher what is written. It would appear that His wife Margaret became the first Sneade Tenant of the Herbert Arms in Chirbury around the time of his death in 1816 and the Sneade's continued to be tenants until Annie Sneade and her husband Robert White who were raising their family in Liverpool decided to take over the Herbert Arms after her brother William Sneade returned to build a business back in Liverpool.

Philip White I would love to see a photo of the clock which you think may be a clock which was owned by a distant past member of the Sneade family.

I have recently visited the Herbert Arms and I am totally besotted with the lovely village and the church. Any help would be gladly recieved Thank you

Hi Ingrid,

I cannot really add any more than in my previous posting, except to say that Fred White was the son of Charles Valentine White. I'm not sure if Fred was ever the landlord of THe Herbert Arms, but as I said before he did run a small farm based at the back of the pub, with a few fields scattered around the village.. Fred's wife Audrey was a  primary school teacher at nearby Marton village school.

I left the village of Chirbury in 1968 and my mother was last member of our family there, leaving in 1988.

Hope this helps

Phil
