Some more. Using indices only [ not suscribed to commercial sites ] I see both Abraham and Emily Poole in Leominster in 1901 Census, she aged 45, born [ at last! ] in Bishops Castle. He, by the way, died aged 82 June quarter 1902 in Leominster Reg District. In 1901 he gave Birmingham as his place of birth - and you will find his baptism there, at St Phillip's in 1821.
In the hope of resolving this further, try for births of any Henry Abraham Pool(e) 1838-1857; or deaths 1873 onwards. I think that you will draw a blank.
Hi again i think you were correct about Abraham Poole in the 1901 & 1891 census Emily states that she came from Bishops Castle,i will take a trip to the archives just to make sure,Ray
Our last postings crossed, so to speak. As regards checking at Archives, Church Stretton Reg District was extensive, so that it might involve checking many marriage registers. You may already know how to open up the District name (in a particular entry) to see the full list of constituent parishes.

Are you tracing ancestors backwards or the Smallman family downwards?
If the latter, and if you have not seen the full entry for the marriage of Emily Smallman in 1873 in Church Stretton Reg District, you may have the wrong pairing of the four names on the same page in FreeBMD.
I have not tried to find a William Basson in 1881 Census, as I have no idea of his age; BUT might I suggest looking in that Census at Abraham POOLE, aged 61, living in Kingsland, Herefs, with a 25 year old wife Emily. He might be the same as Henry Abraham Poole who appears as the other groom on that page in FreeBMD.
Unfortunately neither he nor Emily could or would give a precise place of birth, but Shropshire for her.
