I am from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, and am seeking information about my great-grandfather Alfred SHEPPARD.  I know that he was born in England in 1857 (but do not know where)  and that he was sent out to Trinidad on secondment to the Trinidad Police Force in the mid-nineteenth century.  There he remained, and never returned to England.   He was married in Trinidad on 25th June 1881 to Virginia de Freitas, daughter of Portuguese parents.
I also know that he had many relatives in Wem, Shropshire, and am in possession of several photos of them, with names and dates.  One of them appears to have been in the 2nd Battalion, The King's Shropshire Light Infantry.  I would welcome any suggestions as how to move forward towards finding out more.

Hello Val

If you are certain that Alfred didn't have another forename and that he was definitely born in 1857 (what was your source for this?) then at the moment I can only see two likely births in the indexes, one at Leominster in Herefordshire and the other in Holborn, London.

Does his Marriage Certificate in Trinidad give any information of his parents or his origin?

I can't find anyone with the surname SHEPP(A/E)RD living in Wem at the time of the 1861 although there is a family at Press which is not too far away. In the 1871 census an Elizabeth SHEPPARD (born about 1843 in Lancashire, a school mistress) is lodging with Anne BOULTON in Wem. Does any of this ring any bells with you?

Do the photographs you have provide any specific information which might help?

Try this phrase "police secondment to trinidad" (without the quotes) in a search engine. You will find several interesting responses.
