Hi I'm researching my ancestor SAMUEL BALDWIN (BALDWYN) or BIRD, b.1788, Stanton Lacy, I have found a record from the Shropshire Extracted Parish Records:-

Text:

08 May 1788 Samuel Baldwyn (illegit.) s. of Ann Bird. Tax pd bap.

Book:

Burialls. (Burial)

Collection:

Shropshire: Stanton Lacy, Bitterley - Parish Registers, Hereford Diocese

I know that Samuel lived to marry and have children and wondered if the above record shows just his baptism (& that the 'Burials Book' is a mistake) or maybe that his mother, Ann Bird, died, possibly at or shortly after Samuel's birth,

I am curious to know who Samuel's father is (Samuel calls himself both Samuel Baldwin or Bird throughout his life) - Strangely I have found a record of a:

Samuel Baldwyn marrying a 'Mary' Bird the year after my Samuel's birth in 1789 in Shropshire - could this be his father, perhaps marrying a sister of Ann Bird?

If anyone is able to spare the time to look up any info it would be much appreciated

regards, Lisa Andrews

Hello Lisa

The parish register at that time had the Baptisms and Burials written within the same book which has resulted in the rather strange description of the record source.

The actual Baptism record reads as you found:-
1788 May 8 Samuel Baldwyn (illegit.) s. of Ann Bird. Tax pd bap.

I think it is almost impossible in most cases to establish the name of the father in these cases unless you happen to be lucky and find some parish record where the mother is required to name the father so that the parish could pursue him for money for the upkeep of the child.

In addition to the marriage you found there is another as follows:-
1801 May 28 William SMITH p. [of] Hopton Castle & Ann BIRD [by] Lic[ence].

This information is taken from the microfiche copy of the Printed Parish Register which shows quite a lot of people named BIRD in the parish.

You can purchase copies of the microfiche very cheaply from Shropshire FHS - see Shop at the top right of this screen.

The addition of a second forename at baptisms of illegitimate children can often indicate the reputed father's name, particularly when that second name is normally a surname. And Baldwin / Baldwyn was a frequent surname in the area.

For example, if you search he IGI for Salop for 20 years either side of 1752 yu will find a number of Samuels Baldwin including one each in Stanton Lacy and adjoining parishes of Bromfield and Onibury.

As Michael says, something may be in te Poor Law records for SL, if they survive; and sometimes the information can be found as a separate record by searching Shropshire Archives' online catalogue. www.archives.shropshire.gov.uk . No @ for this purpose: that is for e-mail; which you can use if you want them to search for you; now a minimum of £5-00.

Thankyou to you both - I did spot the marriage of Ann Bird to William Smith and also wondered about that - but not being sure if Ann Bird had died was unsure if this was my Ann Bird, but from what you say it looks as if the record i found was probably just the baptism of samuel not the death of his mother - well i have been trying to sort this out for sometime and will continue to do so - thanks again, Lisa
