I have been trying to trace down my SALTER family.  I possess a copy of a 19th century watercolour painting of The Rising Sun Inn on Butchers Row, Shrewsbury.  The inn sign clearly shows E or F SALTER at the bottom.  The story is that my family owned that inn.  I am trying to trace a MARTIN SALTER (my great grandfather).  Is there any way I can find out the innkeepers of the Rising Sun during the 19th century?  Can anyone help me? Thank you.

Hello Michael

I presume you have a reasonably precise date, or span of dates, from census and other sources. Using these you should look through Trade Directories of the period. There are some available online at the Historical Directories web site.

Click 'Find by keywords', select Shropshire in the location drop down list then leave decade and name as 'All' and put Salter in the keywords box then click 'Find Directories'. Select the ones nearest your known dates by clicking 'Directory' on the right then keep clicking 'Next hit' near the top until you reach the Shrewsbury entries and see what comes up.

A book "Shrewsbury - A Heritage of Old Inns and Taverns" was published in 2009 (I think) and may well be useful to you.

Hello Michael,

Have a look at www.darwincountry.org for another painting of the Rising Sun by F.W. Seville held, I think, by the text, by Shrewsbury Museum. There is also a Debtors Petition (I assume for bankrupcy or something similar,on the London Gazette website, but this is dated 25th February 1896 and in the name of Joseph Cooper, beerhouse keeper, carpenter and joiner. The title of the document is unclear.

I obtained these by Google-ing the pub with address.

Good luck. Hazel

Thank you very much for your help. Out of interest I have a copy of a watercolour in which the name on the inn sign was 'J Cooper' so clearly by the mid 1890's it was owned by Joseph Cooper. Thanks for that, that lets me know that it was before that time when it was in the hands of the Salter family and the name at the bottom is indeed the owner of the inn.

Thank you for your help.  I will have a look at the Trade Directories, that is a good idea!

Thanks Hazel.  I wish I could show the painting that I possess.  But I know that it, for some reason, was a magnet for artists to set up their easel and start painting... there are many beautiful paintings of Burchers Row out there.
