I am looking for information on Richard GUY, who was born in 1811 at Coalpit Bank.   According to the 1881 Census he was a farmer of 104 acres employing 3 labourers.   I have made several attempts to find out more about the farm but to no avail. I would appreciate any assistance as to where I might find further information, i.e. was he the owner or a tenant farmer, where it was located and whether there might be any photographs of the farm

Hello Peter

Have you found the Baptism records for his children and the Birth Certificates for any of them who were born after 1837?  Either of these records might hopefully give you the name of the farm.

Presumably the 1881 census doesn't name the farm so try looking at the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census in the hope that the enumerator was more generous with location information.

Have you found Richard's death and/or burial.  If he hadn't left the farm before he died then these records may help.

If you can give us some more details, name of wife and children and when they were born, someone may be able to locate something.  Do you know whether the family were Church of England or Non Conformist?

Hello Mike

Thank you for your posting.

Richard Guy was born in 1810, married Elizabeth Hayward on 10 October 1831. I think he died in 1885. On the 1871 Census he is shown as a Charter Master living on High Street, Madeley, but on the 1881 Census he is shown as a Farmer, head of the family, living on Bridge Street with his Daughter, Maria, and Son-in-Law, John Davies, and their children, James, Jessie (my grandmother) Joseph and Maud. Maria was born in 1848  and married John Davies at Brandlee Chapel on 15 November  1870. Richard is shown as a Charter Master on the marriage certificate.

Another of Richard's daughters, Betsy, born 1841, married Alfred Jones (my paternal great grandfather) at Brandlee Chapel on 4 July 1864.

The family were always Methodist.

Hello Peter,

It would seem that Richard GUY died on 28 July 1886.

His Will is indexed at this link:

and similarly in Ancestry.
