I have recently received a birth certificate for Thomas EVANS born on 19 Oct 1863 in Cleobury Mortimer. The place name looks like 'Doclsplot' but it's hard to read.

Does this ring any bells please?

Sorry! Just found in the 1861 census it's listed as 'Dods Plot'.

Hello

If you want to know where Dods Plot is / was located you might like to try Cleobury Mortimer & District History Society to see if they have heard of it.

31/01/2016:-  Having looked at nearby entries in 1861 census I believe I have found it on a 1902 Map of Cleobury Mortimer where there is a place notated as Dogsplatt. It is near the Union Workhouse. This links to the appropriate Map:-

http://maps.nls.uk/view/101595460

On a modern map it would have been on the approach road to The Glen Caravan Park (the site of the Union Workhouse), off Catherton Rd..

Grid Ref 52° 23' 02" N 2° 29' 18" W

There is a house at this location but it is considerably larger than indicated on earlier map and whether it includes any of the original is not obvious from aerial view.

Edit 01/02/2016:-  Just found this map which has Doddsplatt at above location. You will need to zoom in to maximum. (zoom level 1, 1:2500)

Many thanks for that Malcolm. I hadn't received notification of your reply and only came back here because I accidentally clicked on the wrong link in my history list!

The streetmap link didn't quite take me to the right place, I had to search around. I think this is it:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=366861&y=276325&z=106&sv=366861,276...

Interesting how the place name has been corrupted over the years. I wonder what the origin was.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark, Sorry for slight glitch in location. It appears I forgot to move Pointer arrow to exact location but you did find it despite that.

I think sometimes the corruption occurs when people from different areas are doing the recording and don't fully understand/recognise the local dialect/accent. Spelling has also become much more standardised than in the 19th C.
