From census information my ancestor, Phoebe Jones, who was born in Madeley 1832, daughter of Daniel and Ellen Jones, is given as a china painter. Is it possible to find out more about her life and work as a china painter? I believe she could have died in 1865 but I have yet to prove this.

As for china Painting as an occupation, it is exactly what it says;

As she lived in Madeley, she would be making the famous COALPORT CHINA , indeed her sister in 1851 was also listed as that occupation.

Hope that has helped

Thanks Angela. The reason I am interested in Phoebe is that I can remember when I was a small boy my paternal grandmother having chinaware on the top shelf of a cupboard covered in tissue paper which we weren't allowed to see or touch because it had been "painted by Phoebe" and she didn't want to risk it being damaged. Although I have quite a few census forms, the 1851  is one I don't have so I was unaware of her sister being a china painter also.  A few years ago we visited Madeley and the Coalport museum because of the family connection and found it most interesting. My maternal grandmother, Jessie Ann Davies, who was born in 1874, also came from Madeley. With a name like Jones you will understand how difficult it has been researching my family tree! Thanks again, Peter
