I have the Chirbury Parish Registers and, as there are three churches in the Parish - Chirbury, Marton and Middleton - I'm trying to establish in which of the churches a given event would have occurred. Is there any way of finding this information out?

Hello Andrew

This is quite a common problem at a particular period in history when daughter churches were built within parishes so that the parishioners didn't have to walk so far to church but the only register was that of the parent church.

As time went on the daughter churches gradually introduced their own registers. In your case there is no trace of Marton St Marks ever having its own registers but Middleton in Chirbury has its own Baptism and Marriage registers from 1846 and Burial register from 1847.

The registers of Chirbury begin in 1629 but unless there is a note in the register by the officiating Minister then I think it is almost impossible to establish where a particular event took place. There is one possible exception and that is for Burials where you are lucky enough to find a grave stone for your relative. In this case you can be pretty certain where the person was buried but it is still impossible to know where the actual service took place although it would seem to make sense that it is most likely to have taken place at the same place as the burial.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your response and the information provided.

Those I'm particularly interested in were in and around Rorrington and Meadowtown so it is probably reasonable to assume that they would have attended Middleton-in-Chirbury.

I haven't come across the Middleton Registers, do you have any knowledge of how/where they can be accessed?

Thanks again and Best Regards

Andrew

Hello

If you go onto the Shropshire Archives web site and scroll almost to the bottom of the page you will find 'Online services and downloads' followed by 'parish registers 2013 version.pdf (759kb)' which is a link that takes you to an alphabetical list of parishes. This is where you will find information of the registers they hold for Middleton (in Chirbury) and all other parishes.
