I am trying to find information about my Grandfather Arthur Norton b. 1893 Chetwynd Aston and his parents and siblings, all from the Newport area.

Parents George     b. c1856 Edgmond

              Mary Ann b. c1871 Staffs

Siblings

             Mary Ann b. 1890 Newport

             William     b. 1891 Chetwynd Aston

             John         b. 1897 Newport

             James      b. 1898     "

             Bertie       b. 1902     "

             Albert       b. 1904     "

             Ada          b. 1908     "

             Harry        b. 1910    "

             George     b. 1911    "

I'm sure their descendants probably still live in the area.

Thanks to anyone who can offer any information.

Tony from Anglesey

Per the website FreeBMD (searching whole 1893-1894 for Shropshire) there is an Arthur Norton, birth registered December quarter 1893 in Newport, Salop Registration District.

Hello Tony,

Good news & Bad. On the 1901 census on Ancestry Mary Anne (10), William (9), Arthur (7) John (4) and James (3) are in the Newport workhouse. Neither parent appears to be listed.

However by 1911 the family are all together living at 13 Water Lane Newport. George & Mary Anne Norton have been married 20 years and have 9 surviving children out of 11.

Hope this helps. Hazel

Thanks Hazel & Martyn for your time,

I too have uncovered your findings which still leaves me at a loss as to why they were in the workhouse & why I can not find any marriage details of the parents.

I guess what I'm really hoping for are decendants to contact me with gems of information, photos would be great.

Thanks once again

Put your 1911 census details into lostcousins.com  and there's a (slim) chance that they will match you with a living relative. It hasn't worked for me yet, but you never know.

Hi Andrea,

I think we are very probably related.  My Grandfather Arthur Norton was Ada's brother therefore making your Grandmother Ada my Great Aunt.

Sadly I have no information relating to Charles but looking on BMD it would appear they were married in Chester, which is a surprise. According to the Newport Electorial Register, Ada still lived with her mother Mary Ann and brothers William and Albert at 32 Water lane Newport in April 1936, finally moving out before the 1937 Census. Where was Charles during this time?  If you order marriage certificate Chester 8a 1267 Sept 1935 from the GRO it will give you details relating to his age, fathers name and where he lived. This information will open a door to finding out where and when he was born etc.

With regard to our Great Grandparents George and Mary Ann I keep coming up against a brick wall. I cannot find any information about their marriage or why in 1901 five of their children were in Newport Workhouse but both parents are missing. Its a real headache!!

Maybe your father has invaluable knowledge regarding our Norton family which could help unlock some of these frustrating details.

Hope to hear from you again Andrea

Regards

Tony
