hi, I am from Canada and just signed up. Was curious about the inscriptions, looked up info..seen where they had a Parker at Richards Castle and then it gives reference numbers, then I read where you can purchase a booklet or microfiche with the info on. However where would I purchase the booklet and/or microfiche..if someone could tell me where I could find that. Very interested in getting any Parker from Richards Castle info as Robert Parker was my Great-Grandfather..Thanks ..

Hello

You may not be aware that there are potential problems when researching people who lived in Richards Castle because the northern part, including All Saints' Church, was and still is in Shropshire but the southern part, where most of the houses were a hundred years ago, was and still is in Herefordshire.

This means that someone dying at home in the village will have died in Herefordshire and as a result the death registration will appear under Herefordshire but if that person is then buried in All Saints' Church the burial register will be that of a Shropshire Church.

I can tell you that Robert PARKER is not listed in the transcript of monumental inscriptions for Richards Castle.  Most people couldn't afford to have a grave stone.  I had a quick look to see if I could see a death / burial record for him but without the date of his death / burial and / or his age it is not easy so perhaps you would like to provide those details so we can try to help you.

If you still wish to purchase a copy of the monumental inscriptions select the 'Shop' on the blue bar above (by just hovering the mouse cursor on it without clicking) then the first item from the drop down list which is the Publications Catalogue.  On the page that opens select the SFHS Publications pdf where you will find the places in alphabetical order after the first four pages of general information.

thank you very much. I was at the library today and today as of the the other times, I have noticed the Shropshire/ Herefordshire dilemna which I must admit was a tad confusing. :-)  I surmised from that info that somewhere along the line the borders had maybe changed? I also noticed too today while that the one part of the family of Parkers were listed as Herefordshire whereas the last two offspring were marked as Shropshire. *smiles*

The Robert Parker I was speaking of was my great-grandfather. However I apologize, it was not him buried there but his father Edward who died 1916..Also Edwards father I believe was buried there as well and he died approx 1793..

I know this is an inconvenience but in the inscriptions it says Parker could be found on 35, 36, ST5SJC. Could I found out the name(s) of the Parker(s) found there? It might be easier than me typing off some of the family tree. They had a few family members back then. (smiles)

I would be very grateful if you had the time to do me this favor. I know the records give both names at times but for both of the Edwards they state Shropshire where some specifically say Herefordshire for other family members.. wonder if they did this with the confusion in mind or what..

thank you so much..

Hi Mike,

There's a slight problem with your instruction "select the 'Shop' on the blue bar above then the first item from the drop down list"  there is no drop menu and text simply says "More items will be added soon"

Regards

Malcolm

Hello Malcolm

Thanks for your comment which has highlighted a problem which I wasn't previously aware of.  If you hover your mouse cursor on 'shop' without actually clicking shop then you get the drop down list I referred to but if you actually click 'shop' then the drop down list doesn't appear and instead you just get the "More items will be added soon" message without displaying the drop down list.  Clearly this shouldn't happen.

I have amended my original reply to clear up this problem.

Thanks Mike,

I did wonder what had happened as I have previously visited the 'Shop' without problems. Though not recently.

I'm currently using a tablet and tried the "hover" first attempt brought up the menu BUT also a panel from my OS asking if I wanted to 'open in new tab' etc, further attempts just brought up original fault (my touch must not be delicate enough. LOL.)

Apologies to Joanne for highjacking the thread.

It is an issue using "non-PC devices" I'm afraid, it should work from a PC, this will be resolved when the site is reworked in the future.
