What cemetery would Church of England parishioners from Shrewsbury, Shropshire have been buried in 1866?  Trying to locate graves without much luck.  Any help would be appreciated please.

Hello Nadine

The General Cemetery, Longden Road, Shrewsbury opened on 5 Dec 1856 so most town burials after that date are probably there unless it was the second member of the family being buried in an existing church grave from before that time.  Some burials did take place in St Michael's Churchyard until the end of the 1800's.

If you look on the Shropshire Archives web site you will find some information at Item 22 and also at the bottom of the list 'Shrewsbury General Cemetery.pdf'.  In order to search the cemetery index you need to know the year of death or at least have a good idea of the year.

It might be worth you telling us the name(s) of the people you are looking for and their year(s) of death just in case someone is going to the Archives and has time to look them up for you otherwise you will have to email the Archives and ask them but if it takes more than a few minutes they will probably make a charge.

Thank you Mike for replying to me.
I am trying to find the following people's graves:-

  • William MATTHEWS died 1st March 1866 in Swan Hill Court, Shrewsbury;
  • William Thomas MATTHEWS died in Atcham, Shropshire between Oct-Dec 1894;
  • Jane Jemima TAYLOR (MATTHEWS) died in Atcham, Shropshire between Jan-Mar 1899
  • Francis Edward MATTHEWS died 30 September 1928 in Shrewsbury Shropshire.

I will have a look at the Shropshire Archives and see if I can find anything.  I am keen to find them as I am coming to England and would like to have a look at the graves.  Thanks again.  Regards  Nadine

Finding any particular grave in the cemetery is quite tricky because the graves are arranged in straight lines in a grid system but all the roads are in curves and circles.  All grave stones are supposed to have their grave reference number inscribed on them, possibly on the back or one side.  Even if your relatives don't have a stone you can usually find the grave by reference to other nearby grave stones.

If you look at the 'Latest Images' (top right of this page) in the middle of the top row is a plan of the cemetery which you can copy and print off.  Click on it to open it then Right Click on the Image and select 'Copy' or 'Copy Image' depending on your browser then paste it into any graphics program.  I suggest you print one copy for each grave.

When you get to the cemetery, if you can't find the graves, look for some of the ground maintenance staff and ask them for help.

Thank you so much Mike.  I had to rejoin as I forgotten my password etc.  This is very much appreciated.  It has given me something to go on.  It can be very frustrating when you are on the other side of the world.  Kind regards Nadine
