Our trail has run cold on our oldest known relative William MANSELL. Born 1686 (about) in Pontsbury married Anne HANLY on April 9th 1711. I have been looking through the Parish records to no avail. I might be looking in the wrong place to find his birth or baptism record with his parents listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kindest regards. Jeff

Hi Jeff, if you are on Facebook, there's a really interesting site called PONTESBURY AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES PAST AND PRESENT . I know that a WILLIAM MANSELL in 1911 kept the Cross Guns inn in Crows Nest as it belonged to my Grandparents in the 1920's . You may find someone on there who is related to him. I checked findmypast site for you but only the marriage is on. The only other site is familysearch in Lilleshall which isn't Nr PONTESBURY.

Hi Jeff, I believe you are referring to William Mansell, father of William, Thomas, Edward (bap 1720) , Mary and John. If so, we are related and I can help you. In the Burgess Rolls for Shrewsbury you will find a reference to a William Mansell, gardener of Berriew, who was sworn in in 1721. I don't know how much you know about the burgesses, but one of the ways you could become a burgess was by proving your descent from an earlier burgess; hence genealogy was/is very important. The original records used to be kept at the Guildhall when it was on Dogpole, but I think they may now be deposited at Shropshire Archives. Certainly Shropshire Archives has a printed book in the Local Studies section. William's son Thomas was sworn in in 1769 and several of William's grandsons were sworn in in 1796 (this was how I first picked up the trail). William's father, Michael Mansell a weaver who lived in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury was also sworn in in 1721. If you can prove unbroken male descent from a burgess then you are entitled to be sworn in and I know that Shrewsbury are keen to continue the tradition. Unfortunately I am a mere woman and anyway my descent is through my grandmother whose maiden name was Mansell. If you contact SFHS I'm sure they can arrange an exchange of email addresses. I would love to hear from you.

Lots of Lilleshall Mansells from around this time have probates /inventories at Hereford RO. On the face of it they don't look like your branch.

Hi Pam, After a gap of a few years I am restarting my research into my Mansell ancestors in the Pontesbury area. At the time I struggled (atleast with any certainty!) to get beyond Samuel Mansell b.1868; son of John Mansell b.1826 and Martha, but I did have pencilled-in that earlier ancestors were Edward b.1720, son of William Mansell and Anne Hanly, and son of Michael, which seems to match names and dates you mention in your reply to Jeff in 2011. I would be very interested to learn more about this branch of my tree and would be grateful for any further details. I was also interested to learn about the entitlement to become a burgess but alas the male line was broken when my grandfather (Harold Redvers Mansell) begat only daughters!

Kind regards,

Ian Perrin

hello

i am the great grand daughter of a John Mansell who died in 1922 in Pembrokeshire( he was left there with his maternal grandma of the death of his mum in 1844) but he was the surviving grandson of a John Mansell through his son William and his wife Anne Mansell. William emigrated to Australia.

I have been told that John Mansell the elder was of a family from Shropshire . I see that another William Mansell may have been a yeoman of Abbey foregate in Shrewsbury and features in a declaration made before a master in chancery in 1847 and kept at Kew archives ref: 3693/1/14. If anyone can tell me anything about or point me in the direction of any other publications mentioning the family I’d be so grateful.

thanks Nikki

Hi Johnp3,

I am so sorry but I didnt see your reply in response to my post.

This is the right family line but John Mansell who died 1922 at Folly Farm Begelly is my Great grandfather, bp 1847 by his Grandparents after his mum and younger brother had died in Pontypool, and he was left with his maternal Grandma and her new husband, William Morse. John Mansell (Bp 1847) was the son of William Mansell, he was born in Mynydilwyn, baptised Varteg Oct 1820 who in turn was the son of the couple John Mansel and Mary Pugh married Dec 1819 in Mynydisslwyn. Its this John Mansel who married 1819 who I have little family Knowledge about. We thought William Mansell b 1820 went to Australia after the death of his wife but I am now looking at a possible remarriage in Monmouthshire later on. Any help gratefully received. Nikki

Hello Johnp3,

Thank you for your reply. I will look into those 2 baptisms. My feeling is that they may not be my John as there are no other known Thomases in that part my family and so it seems to be at variance to the naming pattern.

John's wife, Mary Ann Pugh, I now find remarried in 1837 as a widow and by the 1840 census had two more children of her own and two sons by her second husband's previous marriage living with them. Her two smallest children from her marriage to John mansell now lived with her oldest son and his new wife almost next door to her and her new husband William Morgan.

Yes the Pughs John married into had a trail in shropshire,Mary's brother was around Mynydisslwyn in the 1820 and then lived around the iron and coal works near Pontypool for a generation or two.

Best,

Nikki

If it's any help, there was a Brocker Mansell who lived in Sandbrook, Ketley in the 1960/70's . I went to school with his daughter Wendy

Hello John p3,

Thank you so much for all of that info.Theophilus Samuel Mary and Richard Pugh from Trevethin and Abersychan are likely to be 'mine' especially where the docs also refer to Mynydisslwyn. It is so frustrating that Mary Pugh's husband John Mansel just appears in Mynydisslwyn at full age to marry and I cant find any reference to him before that or after his last child was born. As he is dead before the 1841 census can anyone give me ANY clues as to where else there might be written records refering to John Mansel. Ive looked through lists of miners deaths but cant find any reference to him. He doesnt appear in probate records so presumably didnt have a will... Thank you for your time. Nikki
