I have a marriage record for Richard SMITH / Mary RICHARDS dated 25 May 1801 at LOPPINGTON. Would anyone happen to know if the register will give parents names? I was thinking of making a trip to the Records Office but didn't wish to do so and perhaps find no more information than I already possess.

Hello Neil

Between 1754 and 1837 a Marriage Certificate will give you the name of the Groom and Bride together with the parish where they each come from which will often be OTP (of this parish).

It will tell you whether the couple were married by Banns or Licence and if one of them was under 21 years old 'with the Consent of ..............' followed by the date and name of the Vicar.

Both the bride and groom will have signed the register or made their mark 'X' if they couldn't write.  At the bottom will be the signatures of two witnesses who may have been relatives or friends but could have been a church warden or even someone 'dragged in off the street'.

Thank you for that information, Mike. I assume, then, that parents or at least fathers names are not stated.  Neil
