My great great grandfather is John MATTHEWS b. March 7, 1832 in Red Lake Shropshire. His father was William Matthews but no clue of his mothers name.
John came to the U.S. in 1857 and was a carpenter so I'm assuming his father William was a carpenter also.
If anyone has any leads that might help me get started on your side of the world I would gratefully appreciate it. I don't mind paying for records and copies, but since MATTHEWS is such a common name I was hoping to make sure I was finding the right family, or at least close to it, first.

Yes, that is the same John Matthews. I have been on Ancestry (one of those private trees is probably mine) and I know everything about him once he arrived stateside, but I dont have anything about his family in England.
There is a lot of information for all kinds of Matthews in Shropshire but the name is so common Im not able to pin point any one particular family or record.
His death certificate says his fathers name was William but no name for his mother. Thats all I have to go on.
I was hoping there was a local Matthews family that might know of John or William. Possibly a sibling that stayed in England? Maybe some records or a grave that shows a positive connection? Anything would be helpful.

Hello Helen,
Am I correct in thinking your ancester was John Matthews who died on 9th December 1919 and was buried @Lake Forest Illinois @ St Marys Cemetary aged 87 who had a wife Ann? All this information is available on Ancestry. If you can confirm this it helps to pinpoint the correct person. I believe there are a couple of private trees on Ancestry who have this man on them.
