John Walter LEWIS b abt 1878 at Harmer Hill, Shrewsbury at the 1911 Census of Oswaldtwistle,Blackburn,Lancashire. I am trying to find his birth details. He is shown as Walter on the 1911 Census and John Walter on the 1901 Census of the same area. His father was Edward.

Hi John,

Have found John Walter on 1901 census, but notice his wife is Edith, whereas on the 1911 his wife is Ada. However both  women give place of birth as Manchester Lanes.  I assume it is the same person as the eldest child is Rose Eleanor aged 2 born Blackburn. Have found a marriage on Ancestry for John with Edith Ann Kennington (her father David Kennington) on 4th December 1899 in Lancashire. Unable to decipher the town - the transcripition is garbled.

Possible a copy of the marrige certificate and/or a copy of Rose Eleanor's birth certificate would throw some light on the matter.

I also notice that on the 1911 they state 4 children, one died.

Hi John,

I must apologise to Ancestry (that's a first). Their transcription is correct. The marriage took place at Knuzden, Blackburn and there is a very good photo of St Oswald's church at Knuzden on Google.Hazel

Hello John

If John Walter LEWIS was born at Harmer Hill, Shropshire then that is in the Parish of Myddle, earlier spelling was Middle. The Myddle records for around 1878 should be on the Family Search web site but I can't see your John.

Hi Hazel,

Thanks a lot for your replies.  The marriage was between John Walter and Edith Kennington and shows his father as Edward. I cannot find him on the 1881 Census nor can I find a record of his birth to enable me to obtain a birth certificate to establish his mother. Regards John

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the info. Mike, I shall have another trawl through Ancestry. I have been stumped for some time now but shall keep on trying. I have his marriage and consequently his father, also both the 1911 and 1901 census details but unable to find his birth or on the 1881 census.

Regards John
