I'm trying to ascertain the name of a farm in Merrington that was occupied by a John MORGAN in the latter part of the 19th century. None of the usual sources (census returns, parish registers, trade directories, gravestone) give the name of the property. Can anyone suggest any other sources for this information?

John MORGAN was born in Montgomeryshire in 1813, the son of a yeoman farmer. He moved to Merrington with his wife Elizabeth in the period 1852-1854. Their eldest son was born there in 1854, followed by another son in 1856. Both boys were baptised in Preston Gubbals church. Elizabeth died in 1862 and was buried in P. G. churchyard. John MORGAN remarried in 1864 and had two more children by his second wife Maria. The size of the farm is recorded as being 172 or 150 acres, pretty substantial by the standards of the time. After 1881 John MORGAN retired to Shrewsbury where he died in 1888. He was buried in Preston Gubbals next to his first wife. I don't know whether he owned the farm in Merrington or whether he was a tenant.

Hello

It is unfortunate that the parish register does not give the name of the farm in any of the instances where the MORGAN family are entered so I think you may have to resort to buying a Birth or Death Certificate for one of the events at Merrington in the hope that the name of the farm is included. It seems a lot to pay for just one piece of information but it is probably the only answer.

Looking at part of the Tithe Apportionment dated 1838 Edward KENT was farming 148 acres owned by Sir T.I.T. JONES Baronet. This is the only farm I know about which is close to the acreage you mention, which I presume has come from the census, but there may be another/others which I haven't noted. This farm was split into two portions at the time of the Tithe, with the house, buildings and about half of the fields being on the south side of the road leading west from Merrington over Merrington Common. The remainder of the fields were on the east side of the village. The same problem exists here - the farm is not named in the records.

On a very modern map it is described as Merrington Farmhouse but as far as I am aware it ceased to be a farmhouse some years ago and is now a private house. Ordnance Survey Map Ref: SJ 469 207.

Mike - many thanks for your comments and suggestion. I'm beginning to wonder if there was only the one large farm in that part of Preston Gubbals parish. This might explain why John MORGAN was described simply as being "of Merrington", the word "Farm" being understood.

Hello Mike,

Interesting to note Edward KENT being referred to in above texts.  I wonder if this is the Edward KENT I wrote to you about some time back?

Regards,

Donlad

I have spoken direct to Donald to try to sort out his Edward KENT but at the moment the only firm data is the 1841 census when he and his wife Mary were living at Dorsetts Barn [Farm] Castlefields, Shrewsbury (HO.107/927 Book 12 Folio 34 Page 18).

His birth and death are still being searched for but he appears to have still been alive when Mary died in 1844 and was buried in St Michael's Churchyard, Shrewsbury with the entry recorded in the burial register of St Mary's Church.

Re: John Morgan of Merrington Shropshire. My Grandfather Mr Madeley would have owned and occupied a farm called the Mount Merrington at the end of the 19th Centuary and his son Charles Madeley took over this until the 1950's

John MORGAN is my Great Great Grandfather and I have been trying to trace my family on Ancestry Uk. I also can only find on the 1881 census that it states he was a farmer of 150 acres. The census states 5 Merrington. The other farms listed on the census are The Lane Farm and The Old Hall.
