This couple were found in the 1841 census, living in Oswestry with 5 children. John was apparently born in Ruyton XI, c 1803. I would love to have help finding their marriage and his birth record. They immigrated to Canada in 1858.

Hello

Perhaps you could explain the sources of two points in your message to help us understand it better.

Where did you obtain the wife's surname if you haven't found the marriage?

Where did you discover that John was born in Ruyton XI Towns?

In the 1841 census (HO107; Piece: 915; Book: 7; Folio: 6; Page: 4) the family were living in Willow Street, Oswestry. You are probably aware that the ages of adults in the 1841 census were normally rounded down to the nearest five years so this means that John was probably born c.1797-1801 and Ursula was probably born c.1807-1811.  The children's ages should be recorded correctly which means the eldest child Elizabeth was born c.1830/1.

I would expect their marriage to be about a year or so before the birth of the first child (assuming there weren't any older who don't appear on the 1841 census) so you should be looking around 1829/30 which would mean that Ursula was only about 20 years old or just over when she married.

Looking at the Shropshire Marriage Index (available on CD-ROM from Shropshire FHS - see Shop above right) there is a marriage at West Felton (about half way between Oswestry and Ruyton XI Towns) on 2 July 1829 between John JONES and Ursula JUTSON.  Is it possible that JUTSON has been mis-heard as JOHNSTON?  Looking at Family Search it shows that Ursula JUTSON was born 27 Aug 1809 and baptised 1 Apr 1810 at St Oswald's, Oswestry.

Also looking on Family Search there is a baptism for a John JONES at Ruyton XI Towns on 20 Dec 1798.

I can't see the family on the 1851 census which is unfortunate because that could answer some of the questions.

Mike, thank you so much for your informative response! It is a great help.

I found John & Ursula JONES living in Oswestry, in 1851, again on Willow Street. I found them by searching for a phonetic spelling of Ursula and found Ursilla.

The birth place of Ruyton XI, comes from the 1851 census. It gives Ursula's birthplace as Llanymynech, Shropshire.

I have Ursula's maiden name of JOHNSTON, coming from a marriage certificate in Canada of one of their children. That could have easily been mis-heard from JUTSON.

Thanks again! I now have more to work with.

Mary Lou
