I am looking for information regarding my great, great great grandfather JAMES MASEFIELD, who I believe was born in about 1788 in Beckbury, Shropshire. I have found him on the 1851 census living in Pattingham Staffordshire with his wife Sarah (Russell), (married in 1814) but can find no trace of him on any of the genealogy websites.

I found his son Thomas MASEFIELD living in Shifnal (he married Elizabeth Bethall from Shifnal in 1843) and their son Charles MASEFIELD born in Ryton Shropshire  in the 1860's.(married to Annie Williams from Chetton Shropshire)

I seem to have hit a brick wall on JAMES MASEFIELD and would appreciate any help.

Hi Phil, I had a quick look at the 1851 census and noted that some of (who may be) James Masefields relatives with links to Pattingham and Beckbury are mistranscribed on the Ancestry census as having the surname Manfield/Mansfield.

I believe I have found James and his wife Sarah in the 1841 census, this time they have been mistranscribed as James and Sarah Manfred. They are living at Pattingham and James is born about 1791 .

So keep an eye out for Manfreds, Masefields, Macefields, Manfields, Mansfields etc etc! All part of the thrill of the chase!

Happy hunting!

Hello again.

If you go to the familysearch website and just enter James with the place of birth as Beckbury you will find two entries listed for what has to be the same baptism.

1. James Marcofield Baptised Beckbury 29 June 1788 Parents Richard and Mary Marcofield.

2. James Maresfield Baptised Beckbury 29 June 1788 Parent Richard and Marey Maresfield.

Mistranscriptions yet again!

Many thanks for that Jason. That is a 'lesson learned' for me, but hopefully I can move forward now.

Regards
