I spend a lot of money and time searching family on GenesReunited, FindMyPast etc...... I try to photocopy things that I don't need because they happen to have a name on which could be a family member.....I keep finding that the certain person I'm looking for is missing off census or only showing on one....but sometimes looking through what bits I have printed off in the past and there will be there name working on a farm etc......but no matter how I feed in the information into which ever search engine it is it will not bring up that person.......talking to my cousin via email I will find that is the right family member as she will ask her dad or I can ask my Mum.........I am so lucky that my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great grandparents all grew up in the same area, others I would have gone mad by now......The only trouble is that some things were kept secret as they thought it would bring shame on the family and those are the things we are trying to find out.................So if you are like me having a bad day I know how you feel....

You may find this book useful:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ancestor-Was-Bastard-Historians-Illegitimacy/dp/1903462789

I have tracked down quite a few illigitimate children's fathers.

One useful source online is the divorce index.

The death indicies for New Zealand & Australia as well as passenger lists at FindMyPast are also useful for running down strays.
