A family belief has always been that my HIGGINS decendants from Bilston originated from Ireland, all census information that I have found points to the family coming from Wem in Shropshire.
I have discovered that one of my grandfathers many times removed, came from Wem, his fathers first initial was J but I am struggling to find out more about him.
Does anyone know If the Wem HIGGINS came from Ireland at any point, if so when and from which part.
My ancestor was John HIGGINS born in Wem, Salop, in approx 1823, he married Susannah EVANS of Garreg Bank, Trewern, in 1846 in Wolverhampton.
Johns father was named as J HIGGINS bricklayer.
Any info on Johns father would be greatly appreciated or any of the Wem HIGGINS family.

If it is, then he is listed in 1841 ( in Salop) 1851,1861 ( in Bilston) census as being born in WEM, SHROPSHIRE. Lots of deaths for John Higgins after 1861 in Wolverhampton ( Bilston) but only 1 Maria Higgins died Wolverhampton, which Bilston is in the parish;

I can't find any marriages of John Senior to Maria ? But familysearch DO list a possible christening as ;

If you are using Ancestry be careful with entries for Wem (Shropshire) because they got confused between Wem as a town in Shropshire and the Chapman County Code 'WEM' for Westmeath in Ireland. This is a long standing error and I have never read that it has been corrected.
