Hi,

Need help tracing a family members grave, she died as a baby and was buried at St Mary's Church in Quatford however we don't know if she has a grave or not or if the grave has faded or buried under the mud as a lot of the graves have up there.

I emailed Shropshire Council and they sent me the burial register for when she was buried but there wasn't any indication of a headstone and I couldn't find any other graves on the register so could they all be buried in a shared grave?

Hi Mike,

Sure her name is Iris Gloria Gardner and she was born in April 1932 and died June 1932. I have her birth and death certificate and that's all I know on her really. Her parents are buried at the Church but I can't see hers anywhere there.

At the Church I saw an advert from this site offering a booklet on all the grave inscriptions on the church, would that be worth sending off for?.

Regards

Jack

Hello Jack

The church Burial Register is just that, a register of the burials which have taken place at that church and its churchyard. They rarely record the location of the grave, only the grave digger will know that and he is not likely to be with us any more.

It must be remembered that only a small proportion of the population could afford to put a stone on their relatives grave. If the family knew where a relative was already buried then it is quite possible that an infant might be buried in an existing family grave space otherwise the burial could be almost any where in the churchyard.

As far as I can see the transcript of the gravestones at Quatford does not include any mention of your family so it is unlikely that it would be any great help to you.

Hi Mike

No problem thanks for letting me know. Her parents and her brother are buried in the Church yard so I don't know if she's buried in an unknown plot near to them or not, they died in the 1960s.

Her Mum died in 1966 so is it possible she might be buried with her?
