Hi,

I am researching my family tree and am looking for anyone researching or knowing the family of my great grandfather George PUGH b circa 1857 and who married a Susanna BEAVAN. I think they lived in the Herefordshire/Shropshire areas.

Thanks for looking.

Hello Pauline

I see that the Civil Registration Marriage Index shows your great grandparents were married in the Ludlow Registration District in Q4 (Oct-Nov-Dec) 1881 so they were not married at the time of the 1881 census but looking at the 1891 census they were living in Sedgley, Lower Gornal, Wolverhampton (RG12 piece 2292 folio 97 page 29). There is no mention of any children at this time.  On this census both of them say they were born at Gornal Wood, Staffordshire.

By 1911 this couple were living at Clayton, Manchester with a daughter and son, two of their five children. At this time George gives Aston, Herefordshire as his birth place and Susannah and the two children give Leintwardine, Herefordshire as their birth place.

Clearly you have a problem here with the family giving two completely different places of birth. A quick search didn't bring them up in the 1901 census but they might be there if you hunt round a bit. You need to explore these two possible birth places and also find George and Susannah on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census before they got married to see what that tells you.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your message. That could explain why I am having trouble locating him as I wouldn't have thought of looking Wolverhampton way. I do know my grandmother was born in Leintwardine so the 1911 census is a good place to look to check other family members.

I will give your suggestions a try and hopefully some light will begin to appear at the end of the tunnel.

Thak you.

Hi

My 2xgreat grandmother had a cousin called Susanna JORDAN, born I think in Sussex, circa 1805, m.1832 Benjamin PUGH, farmer, in Stokesay. They lived in Leintwardine and had Matilda, b.1833 = m. James BEAVAN. Children Jane b.1854, John b.1856, Susan b.1858, Elizabeth b.1861, Richard b.1864, Edith b.1867 and Percy b.1874.

Susan m. George PUGH 1881, lived Pool House, West Street, Leintwardine, children Helen b.1882, Elizabeth 1886, George Frederick b.1888 and Charles James b.1892.

I tried researching your family about 15 years ago because I have a letter from my 2 x great grandmother, Susan Constable GRECE to your Susanna Jordan PUGH dated 1841 and another from Matilda BEAVAN to my great grandfather, Clair James GRECE, dated 1880. In it they talked about a correspondance between Susan Constable GRECE and Susanna Jordan PUGH.

If you contact me, I could let you have copies of the letters.

Hi Pauline

Gather Mike has sent you my email address so email me so that I can contact you.

Would dearly like to find out if the correspondance still exists somewhere between these two girls in the early part of the 19th century!

Hi Jennifer,

Sorry can't see your email address but I can be contacted on pdl655@outlook.com

Will check with my cousin as I believe her parents, now deceased, had some documents relating to the Pughs that she hasn't had time to sort through yet.

Regards

Pauline
