Hi have been researching my family and am trying to find out more about my 5th great grandfather, Edward Beard. I know he was born in Myddle in 1731 and married a Mary Hazeldine in 1754, but know nothing else about his life, where he lived or names of his parents.

Hello Alison

If you know he is your relative then I presume you know when and where his children were born otherwise how do you know there is a connection. Do you know when and where he died?

Hi Mike,

Have gone back on my fathers side to find  Edward.  I know he had five children with Mary, but have only been able to find out life details for two of them. I think he may have died at Osbaston in 1813, but not confirmed this yet. Would like to try to find out about his parents and trace the family back further if possible.

Hello Alison

We have two Osbastons in Shropshire, one near Knockin and one near High Ercall. Which one are you referring to?

Hi Mike,

The Osbaston near High Ercall  I  think,  as he married his wife Mary on 2nd Jan 1754 at High Ercall, and I know two of his children were born there; so I'm presuming he lived there for the rest of his life.

The SFHS Burials Index (see Shop icon about buying your own copy of the cd) gives Edward Beard buried 6.5.1813 at High Ercall, of Osbaston, aged 82.

So it is perhaps a reasonable guess that he was the one bap (per a real, not amateur, entry in the IGI) 2.4.1732, son of Eleanor Beard. But note that a number of registers are missing for the perid, either just from the IGI (as for some Shrewsbury parishes); or completely (as for Hadnall, next to Myddle).

That entry for Myddle suggests illegitimacy, though it might refer to a posthumous child of a widow. In this case I doubt the latter, and think that Eleanor / Ellenor was she bap 6.5.1696 at Myddle, daughter of Edward and Ellenor (and probably a "replacement" for an earlier Eleanor bap to the same-named parents  18.12.1690 at Broughton (next to Myddle).

But the whole question needs checking out in the registers of Myddle, looking for disproof as much as proof. The SBI has two burials in the earlier 1700s for Edwards Beard and one for Ellenor. In one case Edward was a pauper, which, quite frankly places the family as a type where illegitimate children were frequent.

A trip to Shropshire Archives?

Hi Martyn,

Thanks for your suggestions, I will visit  Shropshire Archives. Only been researching since beginning of this year so I've a lot to learn about it.
