Hi all

Over the last few years I've been undertaking a one name study of this family in Bridgnorth.

I have quite a lot of information about them from around 1600 when they were a small family of Glovers in the town up to the mid 1800's by which time they had become an extended family of Bargemasters & had branched out into London,Tewkebury & Stratford-on-Avon.

They involved themselves in local politics becoming Burgesses,a Bailiff & Serjeant's at Mace.

Like the Pharaoh's they were great tomb builders & had them in Bridgnorth,Tewkesbury & Stratford.

I have however a gap in what I know.I don't know where the pre 1640 wills are or the Bishop's Transcripts & I don't know if the St.Mary Magdalen pre 1610 Parish Registers exist.

Gwynne Chadwick was kind enough to supply some information about this family through a third party a couple of years ago but we now unfortunately find ourselves in a desert from 1550-1650.

If anyone can enlighten me I would be most grateful.

I'm happy to share what I do know/have with any interested party.

Hello James

Bridgnorth is in Hereford Diocese so the BTs are at Hereford Archives but they are closed at present while they move to new premises over the coming months. Probate records (Wills) should also be at Hereford Archives but some Peculiar Court Wills are at Lichfield, indexed 1635-1857 in Salop Archaeological & Natural History Soc. Transactions, 4th series, vol.12 pt.1, 1929.

The registers of St Mary Magdalene church, Bridgnorth do not commence until 1610. Prior to that you need St Leonard's church at Bridgnorth where the registers begin in 1556.

Hello Mike

Thanks for the info.It seems odd that the PR's don't start until 1610 when it seems to have been a Parish church well before.

I'll contact the Hereford Archive & Lichfield & see what they have.

Thanks again.
