I'm looking for any information on William Harold DULSON (b. 9 Oct 1911 Rack Lane, Whixall) and his mother Ethel DULSON (b. 1892, parents Robert and Jane Dulson). I have William's birth certificate and no father is mentioned, Ethel was a domestic servant. Do the parish records hold the answer to William's father? I'm not 100% sure if Robert was Ethel's father as the 1901 census says "g daug" - I'm assuming this is granddaughter).
William was "adopted" by Lizzie & William James, but left Bettisfield approx 1933 - next evidence of him is in Rugby, Warwickshire in 1937 when his son was born.
I have been to visit the James family who still live in the area, but we are both on the same page.
If you have any info, or can tell me where to find the records - are they Whitchurch library or Shropshire Archive or online?

Do you subscribe to Findmypast (FMP) website? If you do, then do a general search on Ethel DULSON born 1892. You will find several records for her including 1901 and 1911 Census, plus a Whixall school log record which gives her date of birth as 25th August 1892 and her father's name as Robert. There are several other children with surname DULSON, some the children of Robert and some the children of Samuel DULSON.
I also did a search of 1939 National Register on FMP, but could not find Ethel nor William. Do you know if Ethel died or married before 1939? Also did William change his surname to James?

Hi Phil - Thank you.
William changed his surname to Dawson (sounds like Dulson when you saw it out loud) and moved to Rugby around 1935 - he appears on the 1939 register with his "wife" although they didn't marry until 1941.
I have no idea why he moved to Rugby or why he used a different surname.
I did find Ethel on the 1901 but there is a 'G' next to daug, so I was wondering if she was the granddaughter of Robert? Or if this was a mistake?

Unfortunately the Shropshire parish records available on the Internet on the Find my Past web site (fee payable) only come up to 1900 so you will need to make a personal visit to Shropshire Archives or possibly Whitchurch Library to view a 1911 baptism.
If you intend to go to Whitchurch Library I would suggest you email them to check that they have microfiche for the records you wish to see.
