The National Library of Scotland has made available online a collection of Ordnance Survey maps for England and Wales at a scale of six inches to the mile, covering the period from 1842 to 1952. The detail on these maps is amazing - every field boundary, footpath, pond, well, watercouse, footbridge etc is there as well as (of course) the roads and the buildings, with many of the latter named. If you want to see the features of the landscape which were familiar to your 19th century ancestors in Shroipshire (or elsewhere in England or Wales), this new resource is well worth exploring:

Thanks very much for pointing out this valuable resource. I've located numerous places for my relatives both in Shropshire and Yorkshire.
Thanks again

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for this information,
I used to use 'Old Maps.co' but for the last 2/3 years have not been able to pick up this site on my computer.
Since you published this new site address, I have spent about 8 hrs reminiscing around all my old haunts in Shropshire.
I must now catch up with all my chores.
Gulielmus.
