Just wondering if the deeds to a property are available on record or is permission needed from current owners? I have the address of my GF (X5) from 1821. Also are there any records of evictions? as my said GF spent the last few years of his life in a poorhouse so I presume he was evicted at some point? thanks

Hello

You could try looking up the address on the Land Registry web site and see what that produces but it will only show if the property has been sold in the last 20-30 years.  There is a small fee for the details.

By and large property deeds will be in the hands of the present owners or more likely their mortgage company.

If your ancestor ended life in the poorhouse then it is more than likely he only rented the property as most people will have done in those days so his name will not appear on the deeds.  It might be worth trying a letter to the present owners / occupiers giving the full name of your ancestor and the dates he might have been in the property and asking if the present owners / occupiers have any idea who might have owned the property at that time. Don't forget to include a stamped, self addressed envelope (SSAE) for their reply.  It is probably a good idea to include your telephone number and email address just in case they prefer to get back to you through one of those routes.

I really can't imagine that there are any records of eviction.  It was probably done by word of mouth.

Thanks Mike, he was a miner so probably rented from the mining co, therefore the deeds would be with them? he was registered as a "Labourer in husbandary" in 1821 so I presume out of work
