Hi,
I am researching the family of Deakin who lived in Pipe Aston, Shropshire. I am particularly interested in 3 brothers who fought in the Great War. My Grandfather was T Deakin who fought in the Somme and although I have his Medals that state his Regiment was the Welsh Guards and his Reg. no. was 2861,  I cannot seem to trace him in the Military Records at all unless he was attached to another Regiment also.  However, at present my interest lies with his half brother John Deakin. John served with the 14th Gloucestshire Reg. and was killed in Action on 22nd Oct 1917 and his name is on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing in Belgium. His father was James and his mother Aleathea.  All records that I researched state that this family lived in Pipe Aston (Leinthal Starkes), however none give the actual address. Pipe Aston is at present known as a 'Thankful Village' meaning that all soldiers from there came back safely. We now know that this is probably incorrect, however, until such time as we can prove that John lived in Pipe Aston at the time of his going to War it will remain as one.  John was born in Pipe Aston on 14th January 1897 and the 2011 census states he lived there at that time aged 14 and was a farm labourer. The family were farmers but was he working at home and on what farm when he went to War?  To successfully remove Pipe Aston from the 'Thankful Village' register I would be extremely grateful if anyone knew the address of this family from 1893 (when I know they lived there) to at least 1918.

Many Thanks.

Dawn Williams (nee Deakin(s) )

Small point, but Pipe Aston was never in, or quite contiguous with Shropshire,

Hello Dawn

Whilst Pipe Aston is close to Ludlow it is not in Shropshire but is in Herefordshire and so you may wish to have a look at the Herefordshire FHS web site.

You could try Voters Lists to try to identify the exact address and you should find these at Hereford Record Office.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info. Not quite sure why all the records I've researched state Pipe Aston, Shropshire then if it's in fact in Herefordshire?  Looks like I'll have to widen the search.

Many Thanks for the information though, I shall persevere

Kind Regards,

Dawn

Some of the very earliest pipemakers in Shropshire were Deakins so I would be very interested if you go back in time and find any connection between the family and the trade and Pipe Aston.

Have you sent for his birth cert?

Births Mar 1897
Deakin  John
 Ludlow  6a 543

That may give you his place of birth.

Thank you all for your comments above. I am just getting my teeth back into this initial question of mine hence my not being on this earlier. I have since managed to trace a couple of other members of the Deakin family and gained a bit more information, however we still seem unable to find John's address at the time of going to War which I really want to do so as to prove that Pipe Aston can be taken off the 'Thankful Village' records should he have lived there at the time.

Really interested that Deakins was one of the earliest Pipe Maker names too so I may have to take a look into that eventually. Oh to have the time...or money :)

If anyone at all reads this and has any information at all regarding Deakin(s) in that area I would be really grateful.  Angela35 Thank you,  we do have a copy of his Birth Certificate but we need to know his address at time of going to war.
