Hello - I was hoping some kind person could help me.  I am trying to find the maiden name of the mother of Edwin DAVIS born 1870 in Dawley.  His father was Thomas DAVIS and his mother Mary Ann ?

Thank you

Hi mamabear,

I've had a little look around and may have an answer!

Shropshire Marriage records show a marriage for a Thomas DAVIS (age 26) and Mary Ann TALBOT (age 26) on Jan. 16th 1865. Occupation for Thomas is given as collier, and this corresponds with the occupation given on the Shropshire Baptism record for Edwin! If this is correct, Thomas also shows up on the 1861 census as born 1839, son of Richard and Mary.

However, I can't as yet find Thomas, Mary Ann and Edwin on the 1871 census.

Hope this helps!

Andrew.

Thank you very much Andrew that sounds promising - it's just so difficult when there are so many people with the same name from the same place so any help is appreciated.

Update

I have found a record on the 1871 census for an Edwin DAVIES with parents Thomas and Mary, interestingly also in Dawley and Thomas also given as a coal miner (on the image). The ages of Thomas and Mary are clearly incorrect though, as it shows Mary having 2 children by the age of 13!!

The same family appears again in 1881 (as DAVIS), and now it shows Mary A.! Their ages are still somewhat suspect though.

Thanks again Andrew - they certainly don't make it easy.  I am just wondering whether he was married before and they were children from a previous marriage.

Hi there:

If you are a member of Ancestry, you can view several records related to this family.  The 1871 Census has four children older than Edwin:  Thomas, 16; Evan, 15; Richard, 11; Sarah, 6.  Go back to 1861 and three of those same children are listed in the family of Thomas and Elizabeth Davies in Wellington, although some of their ages don't match. Thomas was a coal miner at that time.  I suspect that his wife Elizabeth died around 1864 and he remarried soon after.  There is a birth record for Sarah Davies in 1865 that seems to fit with Thomas and Mary's family.

As for Edwin, I didn't find the 1881 record that someone else mentioned, but he appears in 1891 in Bradford, Yorkshire at the home of his sister, Sarah Boycott.  (I found her marriage record, also.)  By 1901, Edwin must have gotten married, but was boarding at a home in Stockport, Cheshire, and working as a gas fitter and plumber, if this is the correct person.

Sorry I wasn't any help with your original question as to the maiden name of Edwin's mother.  I did notice that she was quite a bit younger than her husband, though.
