I am trying to find a place called Crow Castle (not the one in Wales)where my ancestors Harriet and Thomas Lovett (alias William Evans) were living in the 1840s - 1850s. It should be somewhere in the Hopton/Great Ness area but I haven't managed to locate it on any maps. I have looked at an on-line field map of the area which wasn't all that clear (even with my contact lenses in!) but could not see it there either.

Is anyone out there familiar with that area, maybe local knowledge is my best chance of finding it if it's an old name that has fallen out of use.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Jason

Hello again Jason. Sounds as if it was on some eminence such as Nescliffe Hill, or the Cliffe - to the north.

Unless someone posts with the answer you may need the Tithe Apportionment schedule and accomanying maps - at Archives. Pity we didn't talk about this the other afternoon.

Hello Jason

In Foxall's Gazetteer of Shropshire 'Crow Castle' is shown at Hopton, Nesscliffe without any further qualification.

I can't find it on any maps I have access to at home so you should look at the Ordnance Survey 25 inch to 1 mile map of about 1880 in the Archives as well as the Tithe mentioned by Martyn.

Crow Castle is in the Hopton district of Great Ness.

In the 1851 census of Great Ness district 1A there is a Mary Lovett shown on page 16 ,she is 22 and listed as a servant at the Three Pigeons Inn on the old A5 Road, born Eyton.Salop
