What is the meaning behind the town name of Clungunford
Thanks Brian, Canada
Hello Brian
According to 'A Shropshire Gazetteer' by Michael Raven "The name Clungunford is from: 'Clun', the River Clun on which the settlement stands; 'gun', from Gunward the pre-Norman Conquest holder of the land; and 'ford', a river crossing."
Mike
In passing, it was called "Clongonnas" (or variants of the vowels) in some early records.
(I wonder if A E Housman knew this?).
Thanks Michael & Martyn for the quick response.
