I came across a SFHS publication which mentioned the Deanery of Bridgnorth records and it gave a reference but I am not sure if I was being thick but I couldn't work out where they are located. The Shropshire Record Office Catalogue online isn't playing ball and Hereford is useless for on-line cataloguing.

Can anyone help. As I live in London I don't want a wasted journey. Thanks

Hello

I would guess you probably found this reference in 'Sources of Shropshire Genealogy' by Stan Clifford, long out of print but available on microfiche from Shropshire FHS - see Shop top right.

One difficulty with this book is that it was researched and published before the (old) Shropshire Record Office and Shrewsbury Local Studies Library were combined into the modern Shropshire Archives. When this merger took place some document references were changed.

In the absence of anything to suggest the records you are looking for are anywhere other than Shropshire Archives I presume they are there but they should be able to tell you before you make a journey to Shrewsbury. I suggest you email Shropshire Archives, quoting the information you have seen, and ask them to confirm the documents are in fact available at Shrewsbury, or if not, where they are held.

Mike

Hi,

Do you wish to provide details of a specific event you hope to find in the records?
Bridgnorth library may, repeat may, have a copy I could check for you.

Otherwise, as Mike says, do get confirmation from the Archives that they hold the records.
Be aware that some Bridgnorth records (ref' DA2) aren't kept on site at the Archives.
They need to be ordered several days in advance.

Finally, Shropshire Archives are now closed for stocktaking until Wednesday 14 Dec 2011.
