Hello

There is no known gravestone for anyone with the surname ASHWOOD in the Bourton Churchyard.

If you go to 'Online Databases' on the blue bar above then select 'Monumental inscriptions' you can enter your surname of interest in the search box to find out where there are recorded inscriptions.  If you have a surname with various spellings just put the first few letters in the search box and all versions will be displayed.

What makes you think this couple may be buried at Bourton because a quick search in the Shropshire registers on Find my Past does not show them there?

With regard to Wills, the Bourton area of Shropshire is in the Diocese of Hereford, so any Will (prior to 1858) will be at Hereford Archives and you can now carry out a search online.  Note you need to scroll down to see the results of the search.

According to a transcription of the Headstones done circa 1999 there wasn't headstone for ASHWOOD remaining at Bourton.
Shropshire Archives has a list of some wills, but I believe they are also now on one of the big commercial sites either Ancestry or FindMyPast.
Finally why do you think they are at Bourton, there is burial for a Willm ASHWOOD (Burton!) 14 Nov 1794 in Much Wenlock which is only a short distance from Bourton, unfortunately I don't have a list of Much Wenlock's headstones, so cannot say if anything exists there.

Thanks to all for information re Bourton Graves.   Mike   I am certain I found the two burials at Bourton many many years ago when I first started researching.  Cannot remember how I came across the Bourton Churchyard register.   I know they lived in Much Wenlock.  I also remember looking for Wills at M.W.

but there archives were a no-no at the time, presumably still are.

I have tried Hereford Achives today for Wills, but cannot get through to them.

I remember you were a great help to me then, when I was a member of SFHS/

Thanks again.

I have another query - re Ludlow 1881 census for The Narrows -  I remember finding the item I wanted

but unfortunately did not make a note.   Now I cannot find the entry. It is for Mary Ashwood  born Winchcombe Glos. 1825.  Might someone have a look at the census.

Thank you

Hello Joan

If your relatives lived at Much Wenlock then it would seem likely that they would be buried at Much Wenlock unless they had a special connection with somewhere else.

There is a possible burial for Willm ASHWOOD at Much Wenlock in 1794 but there is no corresponding burial for Mary except for one at Broseley where the burial register simply gives her name and nothing else.

Please check your other information to make sure you have the correct dates and locations. At its worst there are places called Bourton in Devon, North Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire as well as Shropshire.
