Hi, a family member has just got me the sequel to 'Never on a Sunday' called 'Once upon a Hill' based on the community of the Stiperstones people. I only received it yesterday, she got it at the launch on Sunday, and it has bits in about my Uncle William Frederick Robert SALTER 1900-1921 Wentnor who married a Annie May EVANS who had a daughter called Beryl SALTER who died aged just 18 in 1940 I didn't know that he ever married let alone had a daughter until last year. It's a fabulous book well contributed by the residents of the Stiperstones. Lovely pictures too. A must for local family historians.  My mother was a SALTER and my Grandparents kept the Cross Guns at Crowsnest in the 1920's.

Hi Angela,

I too loved Never on a Sunday. My Great Grandmother Emma Lewis came from Pennerley and although her family wasn't mentioned in the book, it was a fascinating read. I am putting the sequel at the top of my Christmas wish list. Thanks for posting this, I can let other half know what to buy now. Do you know where it is available to buy?

You can get it from:

http://www.moorebooks.co.uk/shelves/cart.php?target=product&product_id=20083&category_id=249

Do either of these books cover Hyssington? Or make any mention to the families of Wilkes and Passant?

My server couldn't acces the website given by David64, but I successfully googled on : www.moorebooks.co.uk then searched on Shropshire. Extensive list of books found but not "Once Upon a Hill". It looks as thought they haven't posted this onto the web yet.

My great.great grandfather William Hudson farmed at Moorhouse Farm, Wentnor around 1890 before moving to Mainstone. Do you know if he appears in the book.

Another possible ancestor, George Hudson (born Oreleton, Herefordshire), was the schoolteacher at Wentnor in late 1800's.

My dad’s brother also lived at the Bog, he was called Les HOTCHKISS, he married a girl called Vivien.
I’m in my fifties but remember people who lived up there, names such as, LEWIS, BENNETT and SMITH.

My GRANS sister Annie Maria Wardman married Les HOTCHKISS 1871-1942 and her other sister married John HOTCHKISS 1873-1933. I did think that they were related but they are not !

Hi Angela, I spoke to my sister who's older than me, she remembers a May SALTER from Stiperstones and she does remember there was a pub in Crows Nest called Cross Guns,

Hi Mike, I have just found your comment, sorry,. May Salter was my Uncles wife. He died when he was aged 21, May had a daughter called Beryl Salter who was newly born when her Dad died, she died herself aged just 18 in 1941 ! I only just found out about May Salter myself, my Mum never told me that he was married and had a daughter ! May Salter was much loved by the community apparently. She is mentioned in the book " Once Upon A Hill"

Angela, I'm a Lewis, my Dad is John (siblings Fred, Leslie (Bruce), Clifford and Doris.  His Dad was Frederick Clifford LEWIS and his mum Doris Amy SUDLOW.  The Sudlows moved into the area from the Ellesmere, but the Lewises are long term Stiperstones / Snailbeach stock.  Frederick's parents were Thomas and Annie (nee WARDMAN) - they are buried on the right hand side as you go into St Luke's churchyard.  Annie's brother Arthur was one of the men killed in the shaft accident of 1895.

Annie and Arthur's parents were Anne and Arthur.  They had siblings Benjamin, Mary and Elizabeth.  Anne was originally a BAILEY from Acton Burnell - she and Arthur were married in 1856.  Arthur, it says on the 1871 census return was blind as a result of an accident.
