My relative is noted as dying at Brecon Hall, Stoke in the parish of Hodnet in 1859. Can anyone help me with a location of Brecon Hall, and if it was a hospital?

Hello Marc

There is a problem because I can't find any reference to a Brecon Hall (or anything similar) at Stoke or Hodnet and the only Brecon we have listed in Shropshire is near Oswestry.

There is a further complication that a large area was cleared for a WWII airfield and you would need to look at old mapping to see what was there before.

Can you check your original source to make sure you have read it correctly.

Hello Marc

Now we are making progress.  Bacon Hall is half a mile north of Eaton upon Tern at OS Map ref: SJ 655 239  Lat: 52.811210 north  Long: 2.511900 west

This Google link should display the location of Bacon Hall in the centre of the screen.

Hi Mike,

Just read your comment. My relatives also lived at Bacon Hall. Their name was Loynton, just wondered if you were researching the same tree?

Hello Karen

I am sorry I can't help you. I was just trying to help Marc with the geography of the location.

We don't have any record of anyone else researching the surname LOYNTON in Shropshire - see Online Databases --> Members Interests on the blue bar above.

Hi Mike

Sorry meant to address that comment to Marc, I was in a big rush at the time.

Thank you for replying. I am new to the site but will check it out now I have more time. Dissapointing that no one else is researching Loyntons as I have got stuck now but I will keep plodding on hopefully.

Thanks again

Hi Karen,

Do you subscribe to www.ancestry.co.uk? There are several Public Family Trees on their website with the surname Loynton and born/living in Stoke upon Tern in mid/late 19th Century.

If you do not subscribe, then give me a name of one of your relatives born c.1875 and I'll see if I can find them in one of the Trees.

Regards

Phil

Hi Phil

I don't subscribe to Ancestry. Any information you could find out would be very welcome.

My Gt Gt Grandfather Thomas LOYNTON born 1837 (can't find a birth record). On his marriage cert. to Jane TOOTH on 27 Dec 1859 his father Edward is recorded at dead. On 1861 census Bacon Hall, there is Elizabeth LOYNTON widow born 1811, head of household, I wondered if this is Thomas Loynton's mother but unable to prove it. Think she had a daughter Sarah born 1850 Stoke on Tern, if I could find out her father's name that might help.

There are lots of Loyntons in that area unfortunately I can't tie them up.

Kind Regards

Karen

Hi Marc

My family were living at Bacon Hall on the 1861 census. That is Thomas LOYNTON 24, wife Jane 22 and son Samson 1month. I believe 3 other families (mostly agricultural workers) were also living there at the time including Elizabeth LOYNTON widow who I am trying to find out if she was Thomas's mother.

Apparenty in 1840 Bacon Hall was known as Sydney End, but by 1861 had it's name changed for some reason. I think it was owned by the Heatley family who were the chief landowners and farmers in Eaton at the time.

On another line in my family history, my Gt Gt Grandma Betsy HIGGINSON, after having my Gt Grandfather William Henry HIGGINSON, went on to marry Enoch BRASONELL born 1851 Stoke on Tern. They had two sons and emigrated to Canada.

Hope this is of some use to you.

Regards

Karen

Hello Karen

Thomas Loynton is also my G G Grandfather and I have been researching for last two years. I have a lot of info regards Loynton family and some photos. It appears that everyone is stumped by his birth but after searching baptisms in Stoke on Tern over a ten year period I think I have cracked it - not what you would expect. I also have a short biog of his life as a preacher in the West Midlands.

My mothers father was John Allen Swanwick Hoard who married Mary Annie Jane Loynton dau of Thomas.

As regards Bacon Hall it was called Sydneyend on OS map 1880 but Bacon Hall again on 1900 OS map. if you want to view go to maps.nls.uk (National Library of Scotland) and click on Find by Place. This will give you UK map and you select location you want.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

That's fascinating, I would be very interested to know what you have found out about Thomas' birth as it has been puzzling me for years.

I also have a piece about his life as a preacher, it's possibly the same piece as you written after his death by the Methodist church I think.

I have a photograph of Jane Tooth with her daughters sitting outside their house, do you have that one? If not I would be pleased to send you a copy.

Thanks for the information on Sydneyend, I will check out the map.

Kind Regards

Karen
