Bromfield Monumental Inscriptions
I live in Australia but planning a trip to the UK for later this year. I would like to determine if a trip to St Mary Bromfield is worthwhile to view the grave of Mary Elizabeth HODGSON buried 3 August 1876 and possibly her husband Charles died 1905 (I can't find PR burials for 1905 to confirm). Is there anyone who could confirm if a legible gravestone exists to make the journey worthwhile and if burials for 1905 are accessible. Thanks

Hello Tim
The Shropshire parish records which appear on the Find my Past (subscription) web site are only available up to 1900 and this is why you can't find the 1905 burial.
When you are in the UK you can visit Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury where you should be able to view the burials for 1905. Check their opening days and times which will probably only be Wednesday and Thursday.
The monumental inscriptions at St. Mary the Virgin, Bromfield, Shropshire have been created in two separate and distinct times. The first were made in 1883 with additions up to about 1906 and were made by the son and daughter of the then vicar. There is no known plan to indicate where the graves are located but if you do get into Shropshire Archives the original document does have a description of the locations to help you find the ones you are looking for.
There are two HODGSON graves mentioned in the above transcript which might help you.
1. Mary Elizabeth wife of Charles Hodgetts HODGSON d. Aug 1876 aged 36
2. Joseph Vaughan 2nd son of Charles Hodgetts & Mary Elizabeth HODGSON b. 28 Jun d. 4 Aug 1870. L. H. 11 Jul 1879
The second transcript was made by members of the Shropshire FHS in 1995 and includes one grave which might help you.
Joseph Vaughan son of Charles HODGSON & Mary Elizabeth HODGSON b. 28 Jun d. 4 Aug 187(0)
A plan with this transcript indicates that the grave is located in the north west corner of the churchyard. If you enter the churchyard through the gate from the road and turn left then walk to the edge of the churchyard you should find a large tomb. Your grave is next to it.
For the avoidance of doubt this thread is concerned with the church at Bromfield, Shropshire and no other place of a similar spelling.
