The PUGH's of Bishops Castle

I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the PUGH family of BISHOP'S CASTLE around the years 1720-1770.

I am a PUGH living in South Yorkshire and 16 Years ago my father (now 91) said to me, “you know, we have a Welsh name, I was born and bread in Sheffield like your grandfather and I have no knowledge of anyone in my family every being Welsh”. So this has been my quest for a number of years now to find the first member of my family to come from Wales before my dad leaves us.

I have managed to trace family to Bishops Castle but I have not managed to go those last few miles over the border into Wales.

So far I have traced my family line working back from Sheffield, South Yorkshire to Bishop Castle with confirmed ancestry up to (I believe) Walter PUGH who was baptised on  25 Feb 1767, St John the Baptist Church, Bishop's Castle, (d Mar 1850). On 9 May 1789 at St John the Baptist Church, Bishop's Castle Walter married Mary Higgins (b 19 Feb 1766, Bishops Castle).

I believe Walter’s father or grandfather may be the missing link, but remote research is becoming difficult for me. I think Walter’s father is Humphrey PUGH who married Elizabeth PUGH (or POWELL) at St John the Baptist Church, Bishop's Castle on 01 Jun 1764, however I have also seen records that she may also be PUGH.

I do intend to visit Bishops Castle and Shrewsbury to look into church records etc, however I would like to go into the investigation with as much information as possible to maximise the research time I will have when I am there.

Therefore I would be hugely grateful if anyone can help or point me in the right direction it would be very much appreciated.  Ideally I would like to identify Humphrey's date and place of birth and if possible his parents if he was not born in Wales.

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP!

If it helps, this is what I have...
