Trevor Family

Hi I have just discovered this site and am a descendant of the Trevor's who all lived in the area. Just curious for my father really, if there are still Trevor's living in the area.

Hello Belinda

I used to use the telephone directory and later the phone book on the Internet to get numbers of people but the most recent Phone Book I have was the 2019/2020 issue for Shropshire. Looking in that book there were just 10 people with the surname TREVOR scattered across Shropshire.

Thomas Hallmark

Im looking to find any informationfor a Thomas Hallmark and Margaret Walker who married in Shawbury in 1803. I don't think either of them were local as I have the rest of the family in Cheshire & Margaret looks like she was born in Little Over, Cheshire (1778).

I cannot find any copy of the original parish register so any information would be gratefully received.

Hello Lynn

You can view the original parish register on the Find my Past (subscription) web site. If you don't have a subscription it should be freely available at your local library or archive.

Note that the page shows the Banns followed by the actual Marriage.

Oswestry Gaol

I'm wondering where the police station and gaol where in Oswestry in April 1877 pls?

Also a relative was sentence as for 9 months imprisonment with hard labour by the general quarter sessions of the peace at Oswestry Guildhall.

I'm wondering if it is likely if he was held at Oswestry Prison.. pls.

Thank you

Hello Jill

The 1873-1874 25 inch Ordnance Survey map of Oswestry shows the Police Station near the Market Hall. Use this link <https://maps.nls.uk/view/121148174#zoom=6.4&lat=2813&lon=7833&layers=BT> to view the map on the National Library of Scotland web site.

I am told that there were some cells underneath the Guildhall (which also shows on the above map) but these were probably only used to hold prisoners awaiting trial at the Guildhall.

I have also been told that there used to be a Gaol in Oswestry town centre near the junction of Cross Street and Willow Street but it is not named on the map. I believe it moved to or from other locations over time.

It is almost certain that after sentence your relative would have been taken to Shrewsbury Prison to serve his sentence so you need to locate a list of inmates at Shrewsbury which should be at Shropshire Archives.
