Where exactly was the pit? I have an ancestor John HOWELLS who died 26th October 1870 due to 'explosion of fire damp' and i cannot for the life of me find exactly where it was.

This map

http://maps.nls.uk/view/101594308

shows Wombridge Colliery in the upper left corner, inside the curve of the Shropshire Union Canal.

There are many (Old) Shafts marked on this 1880/2 surveyed map, published 1885; a later map pub 1903 has the colliery and the ironworks to the South both marked as disused.

My Mother used to tell me there were loads of shafts around the area where Asda at Donnington is situated.  Looking at the map cannot believe how many.  Is it possible to buy this map?

Hello

If you wish to buy a copy of the map, or any others on the National Library of Scotland web site, then with the map on screen look towards the top right where you will see 'Order this map' on a blue background.  Clicking this will bring up another screen where you can see the various costs and select an item type at the top.

I often think about buying the maps, the only trouble is everywhere I want is located near the edge, so I'd end up buying several to get a complete picture of the area. I just can't afford it, nor do I have the space to store them at the moment. A motorhome has lots of cubby holes not really suitable for maps, even rolled up ones.
